LOUISIANA
The Louisiana Calligrapher's Guild, based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a non-profit organization created for people who enjoy beautiful lettering and the paper arts/crafts. People above age 15 are eligible to join and to attend our meetings. Our members work in various occupations and have many interests. We strive to hold interesting meetings which allow us to learn more about the different styles of writing developed over the ages and to learn new styles of writing which we can use in the handmade cards and handmade books we also learn how to make.

LSU Leisure Courses, sponsored by the Louisiana State University Union, holds classes in beginning calligraphy taught by Lynn Vincent and Sandra Pickering. Students learn about calligraphy tools and how to write in the Italic hand. A session starts in September and one in October. Participation does not require admission to LSU. Cheerio is held in the northern mountains about two hours west of Greensboro, with an awesome view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is held at a YMCA camp with modern facilities. Single and double rooms are available and the food is resort quality. The Tetas provide a shuttle from Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO). If you rent a car, the Charlotte airport (CLT) is an option. The Raleigh, NC airport is farther, about 3.5 hours from Cheerio.

An ongoing course promoting understanding and proficiency in the foundational hand. This course will include many variations, which can then be used to make variations in other hands. Plus 3 days of color theory to incorporate into your calligraphic pieces. By the end of the course, you should be well versed in the use and mixing of gouache, the use of some of your tools and a book record of everything that you will have practiced.

Using books as part of a regular creative practice and treating writing and image-making as related processes. Sketchbooks and notebooks are spaces to prepare for making a polished work of art, and also to collect materials, generate ideas, and maintain a sense of continuity in your work. For inspiration, we’ll take a look at some artists’ books and sketchbooks from the Jaffe Center’s amazing collection. Then we’ll work on our own books, using simple prompts and exercises that you can use even when daily life seems too exhausting and busy for artmaking. Both writers and artists at all levels of experience are welcome. We might also talk about other relatives in the sketchbook family—like daybooks, commonplace books, blogs, and Tumblr. Bring your own notebook or sketchbook, your preferred writing or drawing instrument(s), and come ready to look, talk, and work. More info:
