C4. Watercolor Techniques for Calligraphers -- Book List
Annie will take part in the book signing session/social on Wednesday evening.
Recommended books:
B2598. Watercolorist's Essential Notebook by Gordon MacKenzie. $24.95
B2855. Creating Textures in Watercolor by Cathy Johnson. New Edition. $24.95
For calligraphers who need help with design, Annie recommends two books. (Many calligraphers have come to this field via verbal rather than visual routes and may have had little or no design training.)
B2346. Design Language, Interpretive Edition by Tim McCreight. $22.50
B2856. DESIGN! A Lively Guide to Design Basics for Artists and Craftspeople by Steve Aimone. $14.95. Annie: "I love Steve Aimone's Design book."
These are classics that help newer artists learn to understand what visual communication is about. Great for calligraphers who don't come from an art background.
B2313. Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. $12.95
B2857. The Shape of Content by Ben Shahn. $16.00
B1772. Free Play by Stephen Nachmanovitch. $12.95

BR01. Brush: W&N 995: 1/2in
Chisel Edged Lettering Brushes.
The standard brush recommended by John Stevens
and other instructors for chisel-edged alphabets is 995 Winsor & Newton 1/2" Golden Nylon Chisel Brush.

BR06. W&N Cirrus size 1
Winsor & Newton Cirrus Kolinsky Sable Watercolor Brushes. 110 Rounds. Size 1.
Sheila Waters recommends these watercolor brushes as a less expensive alternative to Winsor & Newton Series 7. Georgia Deaver tested the brush for us and found it good for brush lettering. For illuminated initial letters you need the smallest sizes. For brush lettering the larger sizes would be more useful.
