B3392. Masters: Book Arts / Wallace
Masters: Book Arts: Major Works by Leading Artists curated by Eileen Wallace. 2011. 330pp. 9 x8 . Paper. List $24.95
Presents the work of two of my favorites, Claire Van Vliet and Hedi Kyle, as well as Timothy Ely, Sarah Bodman, Karen Hanmer, Keith Smith, Barbara Mauriello and 33 more makers of books. Some of these kinds of volumes just show one piece of a book artist, leaving you wanting to see more. That is not the case here. For each artist, there is a very brief bio and 12 to 18 color photos of their works. For many of the pieces, there are two or more photos, so you also get a better feel for the books. I like books and don't appreciate a work as much where I have to struggle to see the "book." That is not a problem with almost all the pieces in this wide-ranging, visual feast of books. The captions include title, date, dimensions, materials, binding and if appropriate, the printing process.

B3343. Real Life Journals / Diehn
Real Life Journals: Designing & Using Handmade Books by Gwen Diehn. 2010. 180pp. 9"x9". Hardcover
List Price: $24.95
This celebration of making and keeping journals will help you design a journal that enhances the experiences you are chronicling. A little book that comes within the main book helps you choose a bookbinding structure that fits your purpose - for example, a travel journal that is portable and has both lined pages and blank ones to paint on. The booklet directs you to the instructions in the main book that explain how to make that specific design. There are instructions and beautiful illustrations for 16 kinds of books and 10 cover styles. A removable foldout found on the inside back cover explains essential bookmaking basics. A variety of people share their processes and their pages. The journals and the profiles of the journal keepers will inspire you to start writing and drawing.
Gwen Diehn, the author of The Decorated Journal and The Decorated Page, showed me her BRAND NEW BOOK, Real Life Journals. It's a marvelous book, full of journal pages, including some of mine. It has great instruction, as well as a huge gallery, and is very accessible to all kinds of people. Perhaps because it was co-sponsored by AARP, the author and publisher were able to produce a really GOOD book. - Annie Cicale
