B3400. Beautiful Bookbindings / Marks
Beautiful Bookbindings: A Thousand Years of the Bookbinder's Art by P.J.M. Marks. 2011. 161pp. 8.5x11. Hardcover $49.95.

The book focuses on the craft of hand-bookbinding. Even with mass-produced trade binding (which started in the Victoria era), the craft continued, and the second half of the 20th century saw a significant revival. The introduction provides an engaging overview of the history and techniques of the craft and of its most important practitioners. DVD20. Anthony Cains: Decorative Leather Technique
Anthony Cains :A Decorative Leather Covering Technique
125 minutes. DVD.

Thoroughly demonstrates his technique of moulding and manipulating the leather during the covering process to produce a more or less spontaneous design statement. Probably the best known example of Cains's work using this technique is illustrated in Philip Smiths book New Directions in Bookbinding (1974) and again in Eric Burdett's The Craft of Bookbinding; A Practical Handbook (1975).

This is a demonstration from the Bookbinding 2000 conference. It starts with an introduction of Anthony Cains and then he speaks for a few minutes.

As for the book demonstrating:
The book he is covering is already bound with boards attached. He shows step by step how to cover the boards with leather and shows attaching the endpapers. But he does not show the sewing and binding techniques used. The book does have raised cords but I do not recognize the actual stitch used.

DVD48. Restoring a Family Bible DVD
Restoring a Family Bible with Michael L. Chrisman. 214 min. DVD

In this Volume Two of the Bookbinders Workshop Instructional Series, Mr. Chrisman teaches how to beautifully restore a typical Family Bible of the Victorian era. These types of bibles are commonly found in American and English homes. They represent the "core" of a family, as they record critical data about the family's ancestry. They were so popular that all through the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th, they were considered "must have" books in nearly any family home. Today, nearly a hundred years later, thousands of these bibles still exist, and families regularly seek out skilled bookbinders to restore them. Here, Mr. Chrisman shows you how to restore these bibles in an historically correct fashion, preserving all of the original binding components. The entire process is captured here on camera, leaving no technique unexplained and demonstrated.
