B2783. Calligraphic Line/Burgert
The Calligraphic Line: Thoughts on the Art of Writing
By Hans-Jochaim Burgert. 2nd edition. Translated by Brody Neuenschwander. (1989) 2002. Approx 177pp. 8.5"x11". Paper Spiral. Available July 2008.
Presents his perspective on the role of form and function in calligraphy and writing, the history of the graphic form (symbol/writing/calligraphy), the need and development of cursive writing and alphabets. The second section presents Burgert’s thoughts, the place of calligraphy in the western world after the invention of printing from type and its relationship to type. Note that this is a photo copy production. Some of the text is produced on a typewriter, some is typeset. The quality of the illustrations vary, but all are photocopies.

B3038. Conceptual Art / Tony Godfrey
Conceptual Art A&I (Art and Ideas). By Tony Godfrey. 1998. 447pp. 6.5"x8.75". Paper.
A clear and engaging account of art where the idea behind the work is as important as, if not more than, its physical existence. An international account of Conceptual art, that considers works from as far as Japan and Argentina, as well as the more well-known locations of Europe and America. The book covers the many forms of Conceptual art: photographs, videos, posters, billboards, charts, plans and even language itself. Traces its origins to the anti-art gestures of Dada, as well as considering how artists have continued to adapt Conceptual strategies up to the present day.
Recommended by Brody Neuenschwander for his Developing Meaning class at Letters Mingles Soul.

B2917. Textasy: Work of Brody Neuenschwander
Textasy: The Work of Brody Neuenschwander
2006. 168pp. 9"x12.25". Hardcover.
Brody Neuenschwander uses his virtuosity to make complex works of art that cause the viewer to look, and read, and look again. He and/or his work has been featured at three of the international calligraphy conferences: Confluence, Experiment, and Legacies. His work is included in most all Letter Arts Review annual issues. This wonderful volume presents his calligraphic collages on paper and a pictorial overview of his letterscapes for cinema, theatre and architecture -- collaborative projects with filmmaker,
Peter Greenaway. Neunschwander’s writing is on layers of paper, naked skin and monumental walls. Superbly designed by Nej de Doncker, this lovely book is bound in cloth and printed on two types of paper -- one for the full color and the other for the text. Though printed and published in Belgium, the book is in English.
