Charles Pearce

A11. Twiddling the Pen to the Best Effect -- Book List

By Charles Pearce:
B2979. Little Manual of Calligraphy by Charles Pearce. $12.95

Charles: "It's not about calligraphy, per se, but anyone attempting to make art in any medium should read it."
B2313. Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. $12.95.

A11. Twiddling the Pen to the Best Effect -- Supplies
NEED TO BRING: Lots of ink or watercolor, layout paper and large pens (Coit, Hiro, Automatic Lettering, etc., not smaller than 1/4" and preferably larger than that). Pen manipulation of the type that we shall be doing is extremely difficult if the sizes are too small, so PLEASE bring large pens. You may also bring a selection of good quality flat brushes, either sable or acrylic. They should be fairly soft with a certain amount of "snap" to them. DO NOT bring bristle brushes; they're useless for our purposes. You should bring some acrylic paint if you're intending to try your hand with brushes.

Little Manual of Calligraphy
By Charles Pearce. Paper

Handwritten throughout, this is one of the most beautiful calligraphy manuals. Each hand is presented with an exemplar alphabet with ductus. Pearce is a master scribe and his manual belongs in every calligraphers library - beginner, intermediate and advanced.

N27. Automatic Pen
Automatic Pens
Sizes: 1 (1/16"), 2 (1/8"), 3 (3/16"), 3A (1/4"), 4 (5/16"), 5 (1/2"), 6 (3/4"), 6A (1").

These poster pens are made of a non-rust nickel silver with a plastic handle. They produce very thin thins. Use them with the tooth blade uppermost. Clean with warm water after use. A new pen should be filled and worked gently on paper
until the color (ink) flows. Any possible sign of scratching will soon wear off with use.

BR24. Raphael Kaerell Flat Brush
These brushes can be used for chisel edged brush writing and watercolor painting. Carl Rohrs finds these water media brushes to be good for lettering. He recommends the W&N 995 (BR01) for ½" & larger. Synthetic bristles.
