B2953. Celtic & Anglo Saxon Art / Westwood Celtic & Anglo Saxon Art & Ornament in Color by J.O. Westwood. 2007. 64pp. 8.25 x11. 53 full-color plates. Paper $14.95. Sale
From the fifth through the eighth centuries, Irish and Anglo-Saxon artists originated, cultivated, and perfected a style of art unparalleled and completely distinct from that of any other part of the world. Selected from incredibly rare illuminated manuscripts, this volume spotlights a wondrous variety of that ancient ornamental artwork. Characteristically mingling decoration, script, and text, the images are alive with intertwined lacings, abstract animal figures, meticulously drawn letters, winding scrolls of foliate designs, and uniquely solemn religious imagery.
This reproduction of a 19th century book of miniatures and ornaments provides a wealth of examples of knotwork, initials, animals, and human figures. The examples are particularly easy to use as models. They have been redrawn rather than photographically reproduced, and the color palette, while still rich, has been distilled to fewer colors. Reprint of facsimiles of the Miniatures and Ornaments of Anglo-Saxon and Irish Manuscripts, Day and Son Limited, London, 1868.

Sheila Waters finds it fascinating and notes that, though it is a scholarly work, the book is written in a pleasant style. Unlike many newer books, this one is so full of information that you may find yourself re-reading page to take it all in. Out-of-print. These copies may have some shelf wear/bent corners.
