Real Life Journals: Designing & Using Handmade Books by Gwen Diehn. 2010. 180pp. 9"x9". Hardcover
List Price: $24.95
This celebration of making and keeping journals will help you design a journal that enhances the experiences you are chronicling. A little book that comes within the main book helps you choose a bookbinding structure that fits your purpose - for example, a travel journal that is portable and has both lined pages and blank ones to paint on. The booklet directs you to the instructions in the main book that explain how to make that specific design. There are instructions and beautiful illustrations for 16 kinds of books and 10 cover styles. A removable foldout found on the inside back cover explains essential bookmaking basics. A variety of people share their processes and their pages. The journals and the profiles of the journal keepers will inspire you to start writing and drawing.
Gwen Diehn, the author of The Decorated Journal and The Decorated Page, showed me her BRAND NEW BOOK, Real Life Journals. It's a marvelous book, full of journal pages, including some of mine. It has great instruction, as well as a huge gallery, and is very accessible to all kinds of people. Perhaps because it was co-sponsored by AARP, the author and publisher were able to produce a really GOOD book. - Annie Cicale

B3307. True Nature / Bash
True Nature: An Illustrated Journal of Four Seasons in Solitude by Barbara Bash. 2004. 144pp. 7.75"x10". Hardcover
List Price: $24.95.
Calligrapher Barbara Bash has created this lovely nature journal, which combines a handwritten text with delightful watercolors. She caringly records and reflects on her encounters with animals and plants during solitary walks around the countryside of upstate New York. She captures wondrous moments in the natural environment: a dragonfly's brief pause, a surprised deer in tall grass, woodchucks watching her from a distance, a raindrop making its way down a windowpane. This hardbound book is a delight. The dust jacket is of uncoated, cream laid-finish paper, backed with plastic so it does not tear. Hidden underneath, a green cloth covers the boards with a small watercolor tipped in a recess on the front cover. The exquisite illustrations are printed in full-color on a soothing cream paper. It makes a wonderful gift.
