This catalog presents seven artists books. The first four are collaborations: artist, printer, photographer, binger and are produced in limited editions. Of most the interest to calligraphers are the last three books -- each a single copy original. These books present poems by Pablo Nerda (Ode to A Beautiful Nude, Morning, Afternoon & To Night and the Truth and Poetry). Thomas Ingmire has written out each poem in italic -- both in English and Spanish. It's a beautiful volume.

Using words as subjects, Ingmire's work has progressed from the transcription of texts to complex multilayered visual statements. His juxtaposition of and interplay between words and images challenges the traditional role of calligraphy as "decorated writing." The book describes the work and working process of Ingmire and reproduces virtually all of his major pieces, many in full color.

Ingmire is best known for his expressive -- and often non-legible -- calligraphic works. This illustrated notebook draws primarily from Ingmire's teaching. It presents the assignments, support materials, the works created by students, as well as images and brief discussion of his own recent works that relate to the program. Topics include inventing new forms, lettering as drawing, the expressive line, the shape and space of writing, the word as image, Hans-Joachim Burget: The Calligraphic Line and The space of Writing: The Ditchling Project. The emphasis of his work is on a visual rather than a verbal message.
Supplies
Pens: Large flat edged pens (automatic pens nos. 4, 5 and 6, (bring just two sizes); Other smaller misc. sized edged pens; ruling pen - if you have one; a cola pen or materials for making one (Ex. Cola can, scissors, tape, chop stick).
Brushes: Black Zig double-ended brush marker; medium sized brushes, Ex. Japanese calligraphy brushes or watercolor brushes OK.
Tools: Soft pencils (3B or softer); eraser; ruler; scissors.
Ink/Paint: Black ink – your choice; tube of watercolor – your color choice.
Paper: Pad of drawing paper at least 14 x 17", (Ex. Canson Drawing, Canson Biggie, Strathmore 400 series recycled pads all work well); 3 or 4 sheets of larger good quality paper.
Misc..: White artist tape or drafting tape - 3/4" (low tack variety); 2-3 small bull-dog clips; flat open dish for ink; water container.
