Takes 60 words commonly used to discuss the design of objects such as decorative, density, design, dialogue, dominance & dynamic. Provides definitions in three forms: brief design dictionary one, expanded comments, and striking visual examples of fine craft/folk craft that illuminate the term. It is a beautiful and useful book.

Supplies for both classes

Pens: Penholders and nibs (various types and sizes).
Tools: Selection of diverse mark making/ writing tools (brushes, balsa wood, ruling pen, sticks, anything you can dip in ink); pencil (3H or 4H); hand pencil sharpener; triangle (metal if you have one; 8" minimum on one side); rulers (18" min): one see-through, red grid, and if you have one an aluminum ruler with a recessed non-skid backing (mm's rock); brushes (5-6 inexpensive mixing; several sizes pointed and flat for gouache).
Ink/Paint: Jet Black gouache.
Paper: 2-3 sheets white or cream text-weight; several pages large layout paper; text and layout paper; (Arches text wove plus others provided).
Misc..: White eraser; palette (deep wells); water jar; 2 pipettes; Scotch tape; glue stick; 8" bone folder; small break-off knife; scissors; X-acto knife and blades; 18x24" cutting surface (mat board OK); some of your own writing, painting, photos, images to cut/crop; typed version of your quote text, in various sizes (simple: Roman or sans serif); pre-class assignment.
Optional: Gouache (variety including gold); acrylic inks; fine awl, stylus or T-pin; aluminum ruler w/recessednon-skid backing (mm's rock). Instructor will provide some to use.
