B3330. Calligraffiti / Meulmann & Eeuwens
Calligraffiti: The Graphic Art of Niels Shoe Meulman by Niels Shoe Meulman and Adam Eeuwens. 2010. 144pp. 9.25"x9.25". Hardcover

Before Dutch calligrapher Niels Meulman started writing on paper, he had already gained fame as a graffiti artist. The book's title lets you know that many of the pieces in the book blend calligraphy and graffiti with bold strokes and splattered or dripping ink. Other pieces are drawn and tightly rendered lettering. Each spread offers two contrasting visuals that interact with each other. These interplays include such concepts as idea/execution, rise/fall, observe/imagine, and destroy/create. Both the text and the lettering are used to illuminate the concept.

B2982. John Stevens SCRIBE: Calligraphy, Design, Lettering Art
B2982. John Stevens SCRIBE: Calligraphy, Design, Lettering Art. Approx. 240pp. 8.5"x11". Hardcover $49.95

UPDATE, 10/11: I have now received around 240 pages from John Stevens and he is now working with his editor. The book was originally advertised as only 160 pages, but now will be over 200 pages - which is one reason the book is taking much longer than planned. There is still considerable work to be done before the book goes to the printer, so copies will not be printed before sometime in 2012.

Place your order now and save. Your card will not be charged until shortly before the book ships. Online orders: Your card will not be charged for the book when you hit submit. If you want to pay by check, reserve a copy by emailing info@johnnealbooks.

A profusely illustrated, full-color retrospective of John Stevens' work with letterforms. Includes calligraphy and lettering -- artworks, personal work, experimental work, commissioned work -- as well as graphic work and type design. His body of work spans paper to stone, books to walls, to type and the digital realm.

In the text, John presents his approach to a design or work and his thoughts on letterforms, and continues with a discussion on tools, teaching, design and writing in general. Using his body of work as example, he makes the case that barriers between fine arts and graphic arts are mostly irrelevant.
