CLAS with Annie Cicale

Annie's Recommended Books (Not Required).
By Annie Cicale: B2811. The Art & Craft of Hand Lettering by Annie Cicale. Paper $17.95 JNB $16.95
Watercolor Techniques for Calligraphers
B2598. Watercolorist's Essential Notebook by Gordon MacKenzie. Hardcover $24.99
B2855. Creating Textures in Watercolor by Cathy Johnson. New Edition. Paper $24.99

For calligraphers who need help with design, Annie recommends two books. (Many calligraphers have come to this field via verbal rather than visual routes and may have had little or no design training.)
B2346. Design Language, Interpretive Edition by Tim McCreight. 136pp. Paper $22.50
B2856. DESIGN! A Lively Guide to Design Basics for Artists and Craftspeople by Steve Aimone. Paper  $14.95. Annie: "I love Steve Aimone's Design book."

These are classics that help newer artists learn to understand what visual communication is about. Great for calligraphers who don't come from an art background.
B2313. Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. $12.95
B2857. The Shape of Content by Ben Shahn. Paper $16.00
B1772. Free Play by Stephen Nachmanovitch. $12.95

One (or more) sheets of good watercolor paper, 140# cold press (CP) such as Winsor Newton, Lanaquarelle, or any other you want to try.  Buying single sheets is cheaper than pre-stretched blocks, and you can try more kinds.
Arches Watercolor. Superior quality, 100% rag, for pen and all techniques. Long used by calligraphers. HP (Hot press) finish is a very smooth sheet that will give a sharp smooth edge to your letters. This has always been one of our most popular sheets. 90 lb = 185gsm 140 lb = 300gsm.
The thicker weight is suitable for wash techniques. For this workshop you need 140 lb CP (one or more sheets)

3 - 6 Brushes

1/2" Aquarelle Brush with sabeline bristles, such as Winsor Newton 995.
BR01. 995 Winsor Newton Chisel Brush. Golden Nylon. The standard brush recommended by John Stevens and other instructors for chisel-edged alphabets. 1/2" $17.55

1-3 round sable or sabeline brushes. I like having a 8 and a 14.
Escoda Brushes. Annie uses these brushes. Eliza Schulte Holliday, co-author of Brush Lettering, highly recommends these brushes from Spain for pointed brushlettering. They have plenty of bounce and good snap and are reasonably priced. Eliza starts her students with the #2 Round pointed sable watercolor brush.

S723. 8-well Flower Palette. (7 "petals", plus one well in the center). $2.95

Liquid frisket / masking fluid  (optional).
Annie's favorite is Pebeo because it flows out of a pen.
Pebeo Drawing Gum. The best masking fluid. Write with the masking fluid in your pen. Let it dry, apply a watercolor wash, let it dry, and remove the masking fluid with a Rubber Cement Pick-up. You have white letters on a color background. Thins and cleans with water.
S198-1. 1.5 oz. $6.95    S198-8. 8.45 oz. $22.25
S199. Rubber Cement Pickup. $2.75
S664. Masquepen has a unique fine point applicator for a thin line of masking fluid. You don't have to use a brush, which is great because masking fluids can be rough on brushes. A prong in the cap is used to keep the tip opening unclogged. Refill with your favorite masking fluid. Popular with watercolor artists. 30ml. $16.95
Annie has not tried this one.
S630. Schminke Masking Fluid. This colored masking fluid (blue) comes in a fine tip dispensing bottle. Use it for mono-line lettering or strokes, let the masking fluid dry completely, over paint with watercolor. Once the watercolor is completely dry, rub off the masking fluid and the white paper shows where you used the fine tip to make letters or lines. Can be used with acrylic inks or other thin acrylic media as well. Ammonia free. 25ml. $12.25

A few holders and nibs (large sizes)
Annie's favorite pen holder is the Speedball one, especially in the new colors!
HOLDERS
H65. Speedball Colored Holders. These new holders have the classic hourglass shape of regular black Speedball Plastic Pen Holders, but they have a durable, double coated finish that gives them a softer feel. Work with Speedball Nibs A ,B, C; Hunt 101, 56, 22, 99, 512, 513. Choose color: Garnet or Sapphire. $3.49

H46. Grey Plastic Holder. Lightweight grey plastic (Caran D'Ache 114) holder. We had tried for years to stock these holders. They come all the way from Switzerland! They are usually a sell out at local workshops. $2.50 10/$2.35ea.
H63.Marbled Penholders. Beautiful holders in gold & black, silver & black, and gold with multicolors. $2.59
H62.Mahogany Pen Holder. Straight wood pen holder. $2.50
H71. Oak Pen Holder. 6.75". A nice hardwood straight holder with a clear finish. $3.25 2/$3.00

My favorite nibs are Brause for medium size lettering 1-4 mm, Mitchells nos. 4,5, & 6, and Speedball biggies. Nancy Culmone calls the larger Speedballs  the Clydesdales of pens. The C-1 and C-0 are pretty great. For larger pens I move up to the brass ones, with my old Powells topping the list. - Annie
