Odyssey Conference Class Listing

A5: PAINTERS BOOKS

Annie Cicale Recommended Books
B2598. Watercolorist's Essential Notebook by Gordon MacKenzie.
B2855. Creating Textures in Watercolor by Cathy Johnson.

By Annie Cicale
B2811. The Art & Craft of Hand Lettering by Annie Cicale.
Annie will be taking part in the book signing session / social on Thursday evening.

For calligraphers who need help with design, Annie recommends two books. (Many calligraphers have come to this field via verbal rather than visual routes and may have had little or no design training.)
B3183. Design Language, Interpretive Edition by Tim McCreight.
B2856. DESIGN! A Lively Guide to Design Basics for Artists and Craftspeople by Steve Aimone. Annie: "I love Steve Aimone's Design book."

These are classics that help newer artists learn to understand what visual communication is about. Great for calligraphers who don't come from an art background.
B2313. Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland.
B2857. The Shape of Content by Ben Shahn.
B1772. Free Play by Stephen Nachmanovitch.
B2052. The Art Spirit by Robert Henri.

Writing tools: favorite pens for drawing, writing and journaling; broad edged, rul¬ing (N22, N30), monoline, other favorites; pointed or flat brushes. Monoline pens such as Pigma Microns (M17), roller ball (M08, M54) and gel ball points. Bring tools you are comfortable with, as we will help you write, but won't be teaching calligraphy, per se. You don't have to bring all of these; we're just listing some options.
Ink: Your favorite black or walnut ink (I53), non-waterproof.
Tools: Pencils; sharpener; eraser (E09); T-square (S623, S692) or rolling ruler (S730); triangle (S464, S613) with metal edge if possible; metal non-slip straight edge 18" (S271); drafting tape (S145); bone folder (S308, S279); small cutting mat (S504); glue brush (inexpensive, with stiff bristles); X-acto knife with #11 (or #15) blades and/or snap-off knife (S621).
Color: Two or more color "systems," including gouache (WNGxxx) and/or watercolor (WNxxx). Others could include col¬ored pencils, pastels, oil pastels, etc. Acrylic paint will be part of your lab fee. A system is red, yellow, blue, plus black and white, and other pigments to broaden your color range.
Paper: Layout bond (P20), tracing paper (P43) and/or graph paper (P21) for planning, assorted art papers (both plain & decorated) for your book. You may want to buy paper at the conference supply store. Some papers will be part of your lab fee.
Misc: Watercolor brushes (BR26, BR27, BR28); pal¬ette (S679, S723); old brushes for mixing gouache; paint rags; apron; glue stick such as UHU (S391); scrap paper for gluing, such as an old phone book; Japanese screw punch (S348), we'll have ones to share but if you have one, it would be very handy; 2 water containers (S731), the larger the better; (beret?)
Note: If you are flying to the confer¬ence, you can skip the bigger items. We can borrow and share.
Materials Fee: $40

BR27. W&N Sceptre Gold 202 Designers' Short Handle
W&N Sceptre Gold 202 Designers' Brush Short Handle

Made to the same high standards as Series 101, these brushes have an elongated head shape, which gives and extra fine point and greater color-holding capacity. Ideal for fine detail work.

High quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for water color and suitable for use with acrylic. For watercolor media, while today's synthetic brushes perform excellently, pure sable still has the edge. With a blend you can get a performance that is close to sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in Sceptre Gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes, and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.

BR28. W&N Series #7 Watercolor Brush
Series 7 fulfills the essential qualities that define the finest water color brush for artists: Point: The brush comes to a crisp point which is maintained during use. Snap & Spring: The brush snaps crisply back into shape with the right degree of spring to allow the artist superior control between the brush and painting surface. Flow Control : The color flows evenly and consistently from the point, with enough color carrying capacity in the belly of the brush to allow flowing gestural strokes. For artists who appreciate exquisite quality and longevity, there is no other brush than the Series 7. Today, just as in 1866, the Series 7 is made for those who understand that the quality of the brush will be reflected in the quality of their work.
