Pens: Dip-pens (Rexel (N04), Brause (N02) or Speedball (N09) square cut nibs – Rexel 1.5 mm or C2 Speed¬ball (N09) is particularly useful), reeds and quill pens for experimenting with if you have any.
Ink/Paint: Black ink, not waterproof – I prefer students to use Sumi (I70, I71) where possible. Some gouache colors (WNGxxx) if in doubt choose Venetian Red or Oxide of Chromium green.
Paper: Layout Bond (P12, P20) not smaller than 11" by 17"; 10 sheets of similar sized tracing paper (P43).
Misc: Cloth for wiping the pen, water con¬tainer (S731), a brush for the gouache (BR27), ruler (S270, S271), pencil and eraser (E09).

While the packaging is a bit different , this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.
"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going in to this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

This hard to find Artist Grade Sumi is Gemma Black’s favorite ink. She enjoys its distinct and pleasant scent and notes that it will produce very fine hair lines. For pointed pen, she uses it straight from the bottle. For broad-edged work, she dilutes it 2/3s ink and 1/3 water. The one oz size comes in a wide mouth glass jar. Try this new Sumi calligraphy ink.
