Odyssey Conference Class Listing

A9: DRAWING FOR CALLIGRAPHERS

Recommended Books
B3030. The Drawing Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist by Richard McDaniel.
B3031. Keys to Drawing With Imagination by Bert Dodson.
B2859. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.
B2860. How to Draw What You See by Rudy De Reyna.
B3342. Perspective Made Easy by Ernest R. Norling.
"A great little book" - Kristen Doty.

Other: calligraphy books I recommend to students, even though the class I'm teaching Odyssey is not a lettering class:
B039. The Speedball Textbook by Joanne Fink & Judy Kastin.
B2811. The Art & Craft of Hand Lettering by Annie Cicale.
B2769. Foundations of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters.

When Kristin teaches watercolor classes she recommends:
B2598. The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook by Gordon MacKenzie.
B2861. Exploring Color by Nita Leland.

Pens/Pencils: Graphite drawing pencils (S142): HB, 2B, bring others if you have them: 2H, 4B, 6B, etc. brand doesn't matter; woodless graphite pencils: HB, 2B, (there are many good brands, my favorite woodless brand: Pentalic Graphite, available Paper & Ink Arts); colored pencils (S524, S525, S526): artist quality – Prismacolor (set of 12 or more OR minimum 1 of each: blue, red & yellow – suggested Prisma¬color colors - True Blue #903, Process Red #994, Lemon Yellow #915); nibs & holder: Speedball "C" (N09) or "B" (N16) smaller size i.e., C-3 or C-4, or Brause, whatever you have or are your favorite nibs; flexible pointed nib & holder (only if you have), not too sharp, Brause Steno Pen No. 361(N90) is nice.
Ink: Hig¬gins Eternal (I09), walnut (I53) or your favorite.
Paper: Sketchbook, spiral bound, 11 x 14" (paper with a little tooth is nice); drawing pad 11 x 14" Strathmore Series 400 (P100); surface regular (not smooth).
Misc: Pencil sharpener (S633)hand held or battery operated, Pentel Click Eraser (E06), Staedtler Mars Plastic white rectangular eraser (E13), ruler about 12" (S270) 30.48cm in length – any ruler will do, but my favorite all-purpose rulers are those C-Thru (S725) clear plastic rulers. They have red marks every 1/8" and some have a bevel on one edge for inking – inex¬pensive. Sharpie permanent marker (regular tip is great, fine tip works, too – whatever you have). X-acto knife (S621, S662); Small water container (S731) & paper towels or pen rag.
Optional: Desk lamp (portable swing arm or goose neck) and extension cord (extremely helpful), Pigma Micron (M17) marker(s), folded ruling pen (N30) & holder and/or other ruling pens you have, stylus or embossing tool (S478), small cutting mat (S504) can use back of drawing pad, Mechanical pencil (S681) .5mm HB or B doesn't need a sharpener; Pan pastels with applicator, a few colors – please don't go out and buy these just for this… only if you have already.
Materials Fee: $20
