Odyssey Conference Class Listing

A12: GESTURAL WRITING CLASS

B2830. Finding the Flow by Gina Jonas.

"Beautiful examples are found in a lot of books, but I would recommend the book of my teaching master Brody Neuenschwander: "doe dit tot mijn gedachtenis" (Jezuswoorden). I have also found the Scripsit (26.1) issue featuring the work of Julian Waters very instructive. And of course the little Character book by John Stevens. Finally, the black-and white issue of Letter Arts Review (LR19-2) from a couple of years ago."

The Scripsit 26.1 is sold out, but Scripsit 21.2 (B2881) is still available with lettering by Julian, John Stevens, Ward Dunham and Michael Clark. Pens & Protocol (B3016) has a section of Julian Waters' calligraphy.
The Character. John Steven is no longer available. John Steven's forthcoming book (B2982) can be reserved.
Jezuswoorden is not presently available in North America, but a book on the full range of Brody's work, Textasy (B2917) was recently published and limited number of copies will be available at Odyssey. You may pre-order a copy.

When Yves was at Cheerio, he mentioned the work of Elmo van Singerland, a Dutch lettering artist. Scripsit 19.2 (B2878) has four pages of his work, along with that of Hermann Kilian, Sherry Bringham, Jose Mendoza Y Almeida & Tony Forster. Scripsit 20.3 (B2880) is similar.

Pens/Pencils: Speedball nibs (N09) C5, C4 and C3; a mechanical pencil (S681) with refills HB 0.5 mm.
Ink: Black non-waterproof ink, Pelican (I04) is a good choice; some aquarelle and gouache (optional).
Paper: a lot (about 50 sheets) of cheap, smooth exercise paper (P20) I usually work on photocopier paper, A3 format or 11"x 17" that allows production of sharp lines without the ink flowing out; a few sheets of quality paper e.g. Rives BFK (PS91), not too big.
Misc: a ruler (S270, S271), pointed brush (optional), Pentel pointed brush (FP57) (optional), ruling pen (N22) or "cola" pen (optional).
Materials Fee: $15

B2982. John Stevens SCRIBE: Calligraphy, Design, Lettering Art
B2982. John Stevens SCRIBE: Calligraphy, Design, Lettering Art. Approx. 240pp. 8.5"x11". Hardcover $49.95

UPDATE, 10/11: I have now received around 240 pages from John Stevens and he is now working with his editor. The book was originally advertised as only 160 pages, but now will be over 200 pages - which is one reason the book is taking much longer than planned. There is still considerable work to be done before the book goes to the printer, so copies will not be printed before sometime in 2012.

Place your order now and save. Your card will not be charged until shortly before the book ships. Online orders: Your card will not be charged for the book when you hit submit. If you want to pay by check, reserve a copy by emailing info@johnnealbooks.

A profusely illustrated, full-color retrospective of John Stevens' work with letterforms. Includes calligraphy and lettering -- artworks, personal work, experimental work, commissioned work -- as well as graphic work and type design. His body of work spans paper to stone, books to walls, to type and the digital realm.

In the text, John presents his approach to a design or work and his thoughts on letterforms, and continues with a discussion on tools, teaching, design and writing in general. Using his body of work as example, he makes the case that barriers between fine arts and graphic arts are mostly irrelevant.

B2917. Textasy: Work of Brody Neuenschwander
Textasy: The Work of Brody Neuenschwander
2006. 168pp. 9"x12.25". Hardcover.

Brody Neuenschwander uses his virtuosity to make complex works of art that cause the viewer to look, and read, and look again. He and/or his work has been featured at three of the international calligraphy conferences: Confluence, Experiment, and Legacies. His work is included in most all Letter Arts Review annual issues. This wonderful volume presents his calligraphic collages on paper and a pictorial overview of his letterscapes for cinema, theatre and architecture -- collaborative projects with filmmaker,
Peter Greenaway. Neunschwander’s writing is on layers of paper, naked skin and monumental walls. Superbly designed by Nej de Doncker, this lovely book is bound in cloth and printed on two types of paper -- one for the full color and the other for the text. Though printed and published in Belgium, the book is in English.
