Odyssey Conference Class Listing

A12: GESTURAL WRITING CLASS

B2830. Finding the Flow by Gina Jonas.

"Beautiful examples are found in a lot of books, but I would recommend the book of my teaching master Brody Neuenschwander: "doe dit tot mijn gedachtenis" (Jezuswoorden). I have also found the Scripsit (26.1) issue featuring the work of Julian Waters very instructive. And of course the little Character book by John Stevens. Finally, the black-and white issue of Letter Arts Review (LR19-2) from a couple of years ago."

The Scripsit 26.1 is sold out, but Scripsit 21.2 (B2881) is still available with lettering by Julian, John Stevens, Ward Dunham and Michael Clark. Pens & Protocol (B3016) has a section of Julian Waters' calligraphy.
The Character. John Steven is no longer available. John Steven's forthcoming book (B2982) can be reserved.
Jezuswoorden is not presently available in North America, but a book on the full range of Brody's work, Textasy (B2917) was recently published and limited number of copies will be available at Odyssey. You may pre-order a copy.

When Yves was at Cheerio, he mentioned the work of Elmo van Singerland, a Dutch lettering artist. Scripsit 19.2 (B2878) has four pages of his work, along with that of Hermann Kilian, Sherry Bringham, Jose Mendoza Y Almeida & Tony Forster. Scripsit 20.3 (B2880) is similar.

Pens/Pencils: Speedball nibs (N09) C5, C4 and C3; a mechanical pencil (S681) with refills HB 0.5 mm.
Ink: Black non-waterproof ink, Pelican (I04) is a good choice; some aquarelle and gouache (optional).
Paper: a lot (about 50 sheets) of cheap, smooth exercise paper (P20) I usually work on photocopier paper, A3 format or 11"x 17" that allows production of sharp lines without the ink flowing out; a few sheets of quality paper e.g. Rives BFK (PS91), not too big.
Misc: a ruler (S270, S271), pointed brush (optional), Pentel pointed brush (FP57) (optional), ruling pen (N22) or "cola" pen (optional).
Materials Fee: $15

S271. Metal Ruler: 18in
Stainless Steel Ruler. S271.

18" Flexible, cork back. Marked in 1/16" and millimeters. An essential tool for calligraphers and bookbinders.
