Pens: Oblique pen holder (H23, H48, H51, H52, H54, H59, H61); nibs your favorite pointed pen nibs. My suggestions are: Nikko G (N113), Hunt 22 (N93), Hunt 56 (N86), Gillott 404 (N74) or Leonardt EF Principal (N120).
Ink/Paint: McCaffery's Penman's Black Ink (I37) recom¬mended, Moon Palace (I70), Old World Iron Gall Ink (I116), or your favorite practice ink; Dr Ph Martin's Bleedproof White 1 oz. jar (I38). Suggested color supplies: Yasutomo pearl-escent watercolor set (S626) and small brush, or several colors of Prismacolor artist grade colored pencils (S524, S525, S526) Derwent Colour¬soft pencils, Dr. Ph Martin's Spectralite 1 oz. size (I27) 14 carat gold is my favorite, Sakura Stardust gelly roll pen (M63).
Tools/Misc: 2 small water jars, newspaper to act as cushion sheet, inexpensive brushes for mixing (BR37), pencil, soft vinyl eraser (S136), Factis black eraser (E08), ruler (S270, S271), pencil sharpener, a few paper towels or tissues for pen wipes, flexible curve, paper scissors or small paper trimmer.
Practice Paper: Any good quality ink jet computer paper such as Xerox, Hammermill or Kodak Ultimate pa¬per. Bond paper or layout paper will also work.
Art Paper: Your favorite cardstock or smooth paper in any color. If you want to work on black, my suggestion is Canson Mi-Tientes (PS61) or Strathmore Artagain. My favorite colored papers are Clairefontaine Maya.
Optional: Any other favorite ways of applying color to your lettering such as: Finetec Mica Artist Color Set (S741), watercolor pencil, gouache, acrylic inks, pastel pencil, Derwent Metallic Pencils, Twinkling H2O's or hot foil pen. Note taking supplies.

Eight pages of good instruction on writing and letterforms
(Spencerian & copperplate) are followed by examples and alphabets. Flourishing (birds, feathers, etc.) is next, followed by pages of 19th century ornamental lettering of all sorts. If you are interested in pointed pen writing, this book is a must buy.
***Due to the poor condition of these books we now sell them in a three ring binder. We have cut off the binding and drilled holes in the pages without losing any of the lettering. If you prefer a copy still in the original binding we can send you a copy, but the binding will likely fail.

The Zanerian Manual of Alphabets and Engrossing. 1981. 140pp. 8"x10.5". Spiral.
The first 21 pages by E.A. Lupfer provide some of the best copperplate instruction available.He is a master of the hand.
Other engrossing alphabets are shown, as well as many examples of engrossed pieces. Revised & reissued at intervals since it was first published as Zanerian Alphabets in 1895. Now printed on 80# gloss paper.

FW Tamblyns’s Home Instructor in Penmanship
F.W. Tamblyn. 2001. (Reprint of the 7th ed, 1938). 174pp. 8.5"x5.25". Spiral.
80 pages of instruction on basic script starting with holding the pen and positioning the paper, followed by pages of exercises, letterforms, words, and sentences to copy. Then 33 pages on Artistic Writing (Spencerian) -- instruction on adding the stresses to capitals and appropriate lowercase letters. Smaller sections on Engravers Script, broadedged
alphabets, off hand flourishing, engrossing and diplomas. A great reprint. A highly recommended manual.
The current printing has a lighter cover.

212 pages done by a number of English master penmen of the 1700s, all engraved by Bickham. Shows a variety of copperplate hands in a variety of sizes. Much non-pictorial flourishing. This is not an instructional manual, but for the study of letterforms this is the best historical source book.
