Ink/Paint: Black and/or Walnut ink (I53); any gouache or watercolors you already have; Dr Martins Bleed Proof White (I38) or Pro White; old brushes for loading color.
Paper: Layout pad Bi¬enfang 360 (P41) or similar; Arches Text Laid (PS97) and/or Arches hot (PS42, PS47) or cold (PS41, PS48) Pressed and Fabriano Ingres white or cream and 1 sheet of black or colored.

Not on Peter's list for this class, but a useful resource is Paul Shaw's informative 27-page article on the use of the ruling pen by lettering artists in Letter Arts Review (LR13.2). It covers history, types of ruling pens, and some technique – but it's not a how-to manual.

Peter uses the painted initials of Adolf Bernd as inspiration for this decorated letter class.

B2081. Uncommon Numbers: A Sourcebook for Artists. A Bernd piece is reproduced on the front and the back covers.
Peter also recommends Denise Lach's Libres & egaux. for her varied layouts and refined color palette. Unfortunately it is out of print. She has a new book.
B3244. Calligraphy by Denise Lach.
Pens: Any ruling pens you already may have; some small-sized broad edged nibs and/or pointed nibs.
Ink/Paint: Walnut Ink (I53), Higgins Eternal Ink (I08), gouache colors of your choice and old brush to load.
Paper: Any textured or weightier paper than layout paper of any colors along with white or cream that are lying under your bed waiting for you to get more experienced.
Misc: A couple of quotations, I'll have plenty, that suggests gentle or tender or delicate or subtle, and one that suggests dynamic or excitement or power or somber.

A dense, opaque, smooth-writing white for your dip pen. Thin with water to the proper consistency. Tint with watercolor or gouache for pastel letters. Recommended by John Stevens and Peter Thornton. 1oz.

P41. Bienfang Graphics 360 Pad
This 100% Rag Layout pad allows ink to flow smoothly but keep a sharp edge. The white sheet with good translucency allows for easy use of guidelines. Very similar to Cotton Comp, but this pad is higher quality. Recommended by Peter Thornton.

While the packaging is a bit different , this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.
"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going in to this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"
