B3165. Impressions of Nature / Cave
Impressions of Nature: A History of Nature Printing by Roderick Cave. 2009. 304 pages, 8.75"x11". Hardcover Retail Price $120.

In Nature printing the image is created from inking the plant or animal and making the print. These delicate prints are both unusual and beautiful.
In the Middle Ages the technique was used to assist those gathering medicinal plants (the earliest datable nature print dates from 1228). By the 17th and 18th centuries, it became used by botanists to develop systemized collections. During the 19th century, the new photographic technology was used. The great revival in the later 20th century was as a craft and art.

200 color illustrations.
