Constructing and Covering Boxes: A Beginner’s Guide by Tom & Cindy Hollander. 2009. 64pp. 8.5"x11". Paper
If you want to make boxes, you need to buy this book. It is a treasure.
Tom and Cindy present very thorough instruction for only two box projects: a hinged box and a clamshell box. Each stage of the box is broken down into detailed steps, each illustrated with a good color photo. (There are over 230 photos in the book.) Using the book is similar to having a master box maker demonstrating the construction for you - and also showing you all the small techniques that are so important in a well-crafted box. First, they show and tell you the tools and materials you will need and why you need them. Then they present how to determine the grain of book board, bookcloth, and paper. Next is cutting board and covering materials, followed by two pages and thirteen instructional photos presenting the essentials of gluing. Now you are ready to learn how to make the two boxes! At the end of the book are fill-in-the-blank worksheets to figure each of the pieces needed for different sizes of the two boxes, plus a glossary and thirty examples of boxes to inspire you. Dimensions are given in inches.
