Call for Entries: Graceful Envelope Contest
Letter lovers everywhere are invited to participate in the 2012 Graceful Envelope Contest. The contest is open to all ages, with two separate categories for children. There is no entry fee.

Cheerio is held in the northern mountains about two hours west of Greensboro, with an awesome view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is held at a YMCA camp with modern facilities. Single and double rooms are available and the food is resort quality. The Tetas provide a shuttle from Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO). If you rent a car, the Charlotte airport (CLT) is an option. The Raleigh, NC airport is farther, about 3.5 hours from Cheerio.

Through April 5, 2012. Exhibition: Alphabets from the Zaner-Bloser Collection. University of Scranton Weinberg Memorial Library's Heritage Room. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Zaner-Bloser was a l eader in penmanship and calligraphy instruction. The company produced manuals providing examples of elaborate Roman, Medieval, Decorative, and Shaded or Spencerian alphabets. The company also retained the original large format penwork for the manuals, and the exhibit will present approximately 70 examples of this original pen artwork. The exhibit will emphasize the work done by Charles Paxton Zaner (The Zanerian Manual of Alphabets) , Daniel Ames (Ames Compendium of Practical and Ornamental Penmanship), Henry Flickinger (Practical Alphabets), and S.C. Call for Entries: Art of the Book 2013. A juried exhibition of members' work celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. You may enter and join the CBBAG at the same time. Exhibition will open July 13, 2013, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Calgary, AB, Canada. Details on the entry process and fees:


April 6-10, 2012. Brush Lettering & Bookbinding. Chen Li and Terhi Hursti. Venice, Italy.
The workshop runs from Friday afternoon to Tuesday morning. Chen Li teaches Roman letters written with a pointed brush on Fri-Sun, and Terhi teaches Bookbinding on Monday. On Tuesday is a general showing. Chen Li is a Chinese-Italian artist-calligrapher who works out of Torino, and Terhi Hursti is a Finninsh bookbinder-calligrapher. Cost of the four day course (from Friday afternoon to Tuesday morning) is 240 euro for first-timers (210 for returnees). Lodgings and meals are the responsibility of the student. There is no association to join. There is a show of the students' work in the Galleria Sotoportego. Rijswijk and The Hague, The Netherlands. The Biennial showcases paper in art. Because a partner in the exhibition, the Museum Meermanno in The Hague, specializes in books, special attention will be paid for this exhibit to artworks referring to books and letters. Taught by Master Penman Harvest Crittenden, Co-Director of the Spencerian Saga, Online study course on the art of flourishing to use with your Spencerian or Copperplate lettering. Lettering will not be taught in this class. You need to be proficient in a pointed pen hand. Covers a variety of entry and exit strokes, flourishing text, stand alone cartouches, the principals of correct shape, size and design, including wedding envelopes and invitations.
