Copperplate: Beyond the Basics
Ocober 8-9, 2011
Course Description
Once the basics of this distinctive hand have been learned the next step is to expand our idea of what Copperplate should look like. Students will decide between keeping those things which are characteristic of a traditional Copperplate and pushing the limits of how much they can change shape, slant, spacing, size, proportion, weight and texture and still retain a Copperplaye "look". Further experimentation will include variations of the capitals, ascenders and descenders, flourishing and working with non-traditional layouts, materials and techniques. We'll also get inspiration from historical examples, typefaces and our own handwriting.

N77. Hunt 101 Nib
Hunt 101.
A very steady and durable nib, the Hunt 101 is a great choice for projects that require larger writing with x-heights above 1/4". It can be used on most paper surfaces, though it can have a tendency to catch on the upstroke when used on a rougher surface. The Hunt 101 requires firm and deliberate pressure to open swells, while its strength and steadiness makes it an ideal selection for student practice.

N72. Gillott 303 Nib
One of the most popular nibs for copperplate. Good flexibility - not too stiff, not too flexible. Very thin hairlines and good swells. Works for scripts 3/16-1/16". Sharp point, but will work on slightly textured surfaces. Tends to catch on upstrokes. Mentioned by Eleanor Winters in her Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy (B1109). Satisfactory for Spencerian Script.

N120. Leonardt Principal EF Nib
After a year in development, you can now purchase a modern nib that is equal to the best of the vintage nibs. Brian Walker, a respected pointed pen enthusiast, has
worked with a pen manufacturer to duplicate the quality and performance of the legendary Gillott No 1 Principality. The new nib has received rave reviews for both copperplate and Spencerian. It’s flexible and responsive, gives fine hairlines, but is smooth writing & catches the paper less.

H23. Hunt Oblique Penholder
Speedball Oblique Pen holder
Black plastic hourglass shape penholder with offset for nib. For copperplate and Spencerian. The offset helps righthanders with the letter slant. Most lefthanders use a straight holder not this oblique holder. However, some use an oblique holder.
These pointed nibs work in this holder: Hunt 22, Hunt 56, Hunt 99, Hunt 100, Hunt 101, Hunt 103, Hunt 104,
Gillott 170, Gillott 303, Gillott 404, Gillott 1950
Hiro 700, Esterbrook 354, Brause Rose Nib.
The Nikko G nib will work okay, but the holder is not ideal for this nib.
Gillott 659 does NOT work with this holder; use H75 (Gillott Holder #51) instead.
The EF Principal does not work in this holder. See H48 Ziller Oblique Holder (Size) PRIN, and both the Blackwell Holders H50, H61
