B2225. Enrich Your Calligraphy/Wilson
Enrich Your Calligraphy
By Diana Hardy Wilson. 1996. 175pp. 7.75"x11.25". Hardcover.

This is not a book about letterforms but about how to go about creating calligraphic pieces. Further, unlike many recent calligraphy books, this book is generous with the
text rather than being a printed slide show with captions. Wilson explains how to be a maker of calligraphic work with both practical and philosophical discussions about design, creativity, and the actual production.

B2922. Hans Joachim Burgert Malerie/Painting
Hans Joachim Burgert: Malerei. 2006. 78pp. 9.5"x11".
Paper.

For those who want to add to their Hans Joachim Burgert
collection, this is a full color book of his paintings 1979-2006. All are of men and women alone, in pairs and in groups, clothed and nude. I've seen a few examples of
these works reproduced in black & white, but it was wonderful to see them in color. Included is a two page spread of photos of the artist. Introductory material and titles in German. There are no examples of his lettering.

B3143. Script & Scribble / Florey
B3143. Script & Scribble: The Rise and Fall of Handwriting by Kitty Burns Florey. 2009. 225pp. 7"x8.5". Hardcover

In this fascinating exploration of the history of handwriting, Florey presents the importance of writing by hand and its place in our society. She weaves together the evolution of writing implements and scripts, pen-collecting societies, the golden age of American penmanship, and our present calligraphic community.

Steeped in the Palmer Method of Handwriting she learned in Catholic school, Kitty Burns Florey is a self-confessed "penmanship nut" who loves the act of taking pen to paper. So when she discovered that schools today forego handwriting drills in favor of teaching something called keyboarding, it gave her pause: "There is a widespread belief that, in a digital world, forming letters on paper with a pen is pointless and obsolete," she says, "and anyone who thinks otherwise is right up there with folks who still have fallout shelters in their backyards."

B3307. True Nature / Bash
True Nature: An Illustrated Journal of Four Seasons in Solitude by Barbara Bash. 2004. 144pp. 7.75"x10". Hardcover

Calligrapher Barbara Bash has created this lovely nature journal, which combines a handwritten text with delightful watercolors. She caringly records and reflects on her encounters with animals and plants during solitary walks around the countryside of upstate New York. She captures wondrous moments in the natural environment: a dragonfly's brief pause, a surprised deer in tall grass, woodchucks watching her from a distance, a raindrop making its way down a windowpane. This hardbound book is a delight. The dust jacket is of uncoated, cream laid-finish paper, backed with plastic so it does not tear. Hidden underneath, a green cloth covers the boards with a small watercolor tipped in a recess on the front cover. The exquisite illustrations are printed in full-color on a soothing cream paper. It makes a wonderful gift.
