H96. Adjusted Oblique Plastic Holder with Metal Flange
This comfort-grip, black plastic, “hourglass” holder with an oblique brass flange is a great improvement over the Speedball Oblique Holder. The flange is tilted to decrease the angle of the nib to the paper, making your up-stokes less likely to catch on the paper and the flange is pre-adjusted for our most popular nibs.
For right-handers, the offset flange allows for the slant of pointed pen scripts without having to severely cant the writing paper. Some left-handed scribes also use an oblique pen holder.
This replaces the Peerless Oblique Holders.

Specify Size: Brause 66EF, Gillott 303, Nikko G or Principal EF.
(Like all similar holders, the flange can be adjusted for additional nib sizes. If you would like holders for a class adjusted for a different nib, let us know and we will add the size to our inventory.)

This holder can be adjusted for virtually any nib. Please let us know the nib you use & we will pick the closest holder.

N74. Gillott 404 Nib
N74. Gillott 404 Nib.

A popular nib. Fairly stiff nib, suitable for writing at x-heights from 3/16" to 1/4", on all surfaces from smooth to textured. Good choice for beginners (or those with a heavy hand.) Because they require more pressure to create the swells, stiffer nibs are easier to control. Thicker hairlines than others, making it a good choice for work for reproduction.

Recommended by Eleanor Winters in her Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy (B1109) for beginners and professionals because they "provide fine line quality without being too fragile." Satisfactory for Spencerian Script.

N113. Nikko G Nib
These nibs from Japan are hand cut, extremely smooth, and long lasting. They are chrome plated and have a medium flex. Great for Spencerian. Smooth writing with no burrs or scratchiness. Highly recommended by Michael Sull. Extremely popular with pointed pen men and women!

N118. Zebra G Nib
Zebra Nib.

Similar to the popular Nikko G Nib, but a little more flexible and sharper. It will produce a finer hairline than the Nikko. Same sturdy quality. If you are using the Nikko G but would like to be able to write with thinner hairlines and thicker strokes, give these new nibs a try. Michael Sull still recommends the Nikko G nib as best for learning Spencerian, but this Zebra G Nib is a good one, too for Spencerian.

Which holders will work with this nib?
http://www.johnnealbooks.com/product_help#Zebra

Just wanted to let you know about my experience with the ZEBRA G nibs: Santa was very generous to me this year and I got a dozen. I pulled the nibs out to play with this weekend and I have found my new love. I used the nib with Walnut Ink and the hairlines, so thin, so smooth, with a light touch and the nib skated effortlessly across the page. I really enjoyed working with this nib. If you haven't had the chance to try this nib out yet, it's worth the couple of bucks. I haven't tried any of my other inks but I will be doing that this week. So far, I'm loving these nibs. Don't know if they are workhorses yet - I only had them a few days. - Ilovepenmanship

I love them too. The nibs are great with the iron gall inks because the ink does not eat the nib as fast. Great hairlines and just enough flex for shades. Much thanks to John Neal for these!!! - Nan DeLuca

N86. Hunt 56 Nib
The Hunt 56 nib is useful for writing larger letters on smooth or textured papers. The nib is a steady and durable one making it a great nib for beginners. The Hunt 56 produces healthy swells of ink when firm and deliberate pressure is applied. Strong hairlines. Comparable to Gillott 404 in stiffness and width of hairlines.

N77. Hunt 101 Nib
Hunt 101.

A very steady and durable nib, the Hunt 101 is a great choice for projects that require larger writing with x-heights above 1/4". It can be used on most paper surfaces, though it can have a tendency to catch on the upstroke when used on a rougher surface. The Hunt 101 requires firm and deliberate pressure to open swells, while its strength and steadiness makes it an ideal selection for student practice.

M97. Pentel Sign Pen Brush Tip
M97. Pentel Sign Pen Brush Tip Marker
This pen’s brush-like tip is great for quick, fun writing. Linda Schneider uses it for pointed pen scripts such as Copperplate and Spencerian! Water-based ink. Now available in multiple colors! New lower price!

M97. Pentel Sign Pen Brush Tip color chart.

Linda's comments:
"...resembles the same calligraphic line as a nib with the pointed pen. The Pentel pen is easy to carry in a purse or pocket, unlike so many other brush markers on the market. Wonderful to practice lettering outside your studio without having to carry your pen, ink, water etc. I am encouraging calligraphers to write anywhere, anytime, anyplace, like at restaurants (a thank-you with the waiter's name on it), anywhere on the go, on location, even on an airplane."

Linda's comments on the new colors:

"I love, love, LOVE the new colors of the Pentel Sign Pen brush marker!!!! I recommend them to anyone interested in pointed pen, whether a beginner or professional, to carry one on them at all times while out of the studio, either to practice or to write notes of thanks."

Linda Schneider, author of Designing Faces, Figures, Florals and More: Contemporary Ornate Pictorial Calligraphy (B3209). These markers will be featured in her forthcoming book Script Lettering and Design: Anywhere, Anytime, and on Anything (B3959).

S950. Topolino Magnetic Stirrer
S950. Topolino Magnetic Stirrer.

If you address envelopes with metallic ink, this little machine is for you. All metallic inks have a settling problem. When you first start working, it takes a lot of shaking to get the metallic color evenly mixed in the ink. While you are working, you have to regularly stir the bottle to keep the pigment evenly dispersed. This ingenious device provides a fine solution. You place a Teflon-coated magnetic stir bar in a wide-mouthed jar, pour in your metallic ink, and set the jar on the platform of the magnetic stirrer. Turn the dial on the magnetic stirrer, and, as if by magic, your ink is stirred! Leave your ink in the wide-mouth jar with the Teflon-coated pellet, and next time the machine will quickly and effortlessly stir your ink for you. No batteries; the stirrer plugs in. Because of its flat design, you are not limited to one jar size. Includes one magnetic stir bar.
(Additional bars, see item S951.)

A range of magnetic stirrers are available, but this one seems best for calligraphers: It is small and won’t take up a lot of space in your work area. It is simple to operate, has no unnecessary features, and is modestly priced (for a magnetic stirrer).

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8 inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

I84. W&N Gum Arabic: 2.5oz
Winsor & Newton Gum Arabic.

Add this binder in gouache to make it more durable and easier to erase pencil guidelines. Add several drops to a bottle of Higgins Eternal for copperplate writing. 2.5oz (75ml) glass bottle.

I have worked with metallic gouaches for many years. I always add a little more gum Arabic if there are going to be lines to erase, then allow the writing to cure for several hours before erasing. A white vinyl eraser is the gentlest choice for erasing guideline. I avoid guidelines if possible via a light box.. - Don King

S937. SliderWriter Laser Liner
S937. SliderWriter Laser Liner

The SliderWriter is currently out of stock. We are working to get more of this product produced and hope to have more in September/October 2017. If you place an order, we will backorder the SliderWriter; your card will not be charged until the item is ready to ship.

This amazing tool eliminates the need to draw guidelines by projecting a line using a laser. No more erasing the pencil lines from envelopes!

Especially useful for dark or lined envelopes that are to opaque too use a light box and master guidelines. Note that only one line is projected and will only provide a baseline for your writing.

The unique design of this tool keeps your paper in place with the paperholder. There is a built-in ruler, as well as a 3/4" Calligraphy Guide, so the lines can easily be spaced evenly. Included are two large rubber bands that allow simple placement of vertical margins.

Left-handers can use this as well. Simply unscrew the clip and then screw it back into the holes on the opposite side of the board.

This product uses a Class 3R laser and is not suitable for use by children. It is not a toy. As with laser pointing devices, the laser beam should never be pointed at anyone. The laser beam pointed directly at the eye has potential to cause damage. Be careful of a reflected beam as well. Do not use around children whose eyes would be level with the Slider Writer in use.

I139-S. Pearl Ex Metallic Calligraphy Set w/ Gum Arabic
I139-S. Metallic Calligraphy Set w/ Pearl Ex & Gum Arabic

Finally, Pearl Ex has created a calligraphy kit for making the pigment (powder) into calligraphy ink. Or you can add the powder directly to ink to give that ink pearlescence and shine. Pearl Ex creates a metallic effect without being a real metal - it will never tarnish or fade. The different particle sizes produce different effects, from a smooth pearly luster to a highly metallic sheen.

The set includes 9 colors that work well with calligraphy, including the new Rose Gold, along with Solar Gold, True Blue, Silver, Aztec Gold, Super Russet, Pearl White, Grey Lavender, and Pink Gold. Also includes three jars of gum arabic powder, instructions for mixing, and a list of nibs that work well with Pearl Ex.

I139. Pearl Ex Color Chart on Black Paper

I139. Pearl Ex Color Chart on White Paper

To make a Pearl Ex ink for calligraphy:
Basic Recipe
Mix 4 parts of pigment with one part gum Arabic (liquid or powder) in a container, add distilled water slowly as you stir until you get the consistency of ink you like.
Exact measurement Recipe
1 teaspoon Pearl Ex pigment
¼ teaspoon gum Arabic (liquid or powder)
1 teaspoon distilled water
Thinner consistency Pearl Ex ink will lie flatter on the paper when dry; a thicker consistency ink (try ½ teaspoon of water) will stand up a bit on the paper when dry, creating a raised effect. Recipe courtesy of Joi Hunt of Bien Fait Calligraphy.
