FP125. Noodler's Ahab Flex Pen
Noodler’s Ahab Flex Pen. This flexible nib fountain pen produces reasonable thicks and thins from pressure. Use it for larger writing and expressive handwriting. It is not suitable for smaller Ornamental Scripts because the nib can't produce the fine hairlines possible with dip pen pointed nibs. For a slimmer barrel, purchase FP120. Noodler’s Standard Flex Pen. The same flex nib is used in the Standard and Ahab Fountain Pens.

Choose Barrel Color:
Clear
Black
Medieval Lapis
Maximum Emerald
King Philip Purple

For filling the pen with ink from a bottle, the Ahab Flex pen has a plunger mechanism that you access by screwing off the barrel. .

This is a fun pen to write with and has an extremely flexible nib - for a fountain pen. You can easily go from thin to thick and back, but the unstressed stroke is far from a hairline. (An extremely light touch and some speed can produce a thinner line.) IThe pen is useless for small copperplate scripts. You can produce copperplate scripts only in larger sizes. You can only produce monoline or nearly monoline writing in smaller sizes. It has potential for wedding invitation addressing where the script is more-or-less monoline perhaps with some more heavily stressed strokes (such as Spencerian). - John

I53-DRK. Walnut Ink Darkening Medium
I53-DRK. Walnut Ink Darkening Medium.
1oz (30ml).

The darkening medium is not an ink but an additive to be used to darken the original ink without losing the unique watercolor characteristics or the ability to lift color or lighten areas.

The darkening Medium is very heavily pigmented. It can also be used straight from the bottle. However, it is so heavily pigmented that it will behave like a sumi ink and stain the paper and not lift as easily as the original.

To make a Pearl Ex ink for calligraphy:
Basic Recipe
Mix 4 parts of pigment with one part gum Arabic (liquid or powder) in a container, add distilled water slowly as you stir until you get the consistency of ink you like.
Exact measurement Recipe
1 teaspoon Pearl Ex pigment
¼ teaspoon gum Arabic (liquid or powder)
1 teaspoon distilled water
Thinner consistency Pearl Ex ink will lie flatter on the paper when dry; a thicker consistency ink (try ½ teaspoon of water) will stand up a bit on the paper when dry, creating a raised effect. Recipe courtesy of Joi Hunt of Bien Fait Calligraphy.

See also I139-S for the Pearl Ex Calligraphy Set of nine 3-gram jars of color good for making ink and three 3-gram jars of powdered gum arabic.
