I37. McCaffery's Penman's Ink
I37. McCaffery’s Penman’s Ink
1 oz. jar.

Formulated for the pointed pen which is used for Spencerian, Copperplate, etc, not for the broad-edged pen used for Italic, Blackletter (Gothic), etc.

The black ink is an oak gall ink which was developed with the help of leading penmen of today to provide an ink similar to that used during America’s golden age of Ornamental Penmanship in the 19th and 20th centuries. With a newly opened bottle, The black ink writes brown but turns a dense black. Good for fine hairlines.

(Colors and whites are not oak gall inks).

Choose from Ivory, White, Indigo Blue, Green, Brown, Red, Red-Violet, Black, Glossy Black.
Prices of colors vary.

I116. Old World Oak Gall Ink
An oak gall ink made with period recipes and materials including oak galls, iron salts, logwood dyes and acacia gum (Gum Arabic). Oak gall ink was used for many medieval manuscripts and is very popular today for Spencerian and Copperplate. For paper and vellum. Dries waterproof. 2 oz bottle.

This ink can be reconstituted using distilled water and letting it sit overnight. Then stir well and break up any solids.

Old World Ink Product Help:http://www.johnnealbooks.com/product_help#Oldworld

"It is really nice and darker than regular iron gall ink." - Nan DeLuca.

"This ink is teriffic! Smooth off the pen, it is jet black with hairlines as fine as any penman could want." - Bob Hurford

I54. Blots Iron Gall Ink
This hard to find Iron Gall ink is available again.
1oz Glass Jar.

In the medieval recipes there are only two methods of preparing ink; mixing gum with carbon or treating salts of iron with tannic acid. Iron Gall Ink was probably invented in the first centuries of our era. However the earliest existing document written with iron ink is an Egyptian parchment of the seventh century. From then the use of iron inks spread to Europe. Iron Gall Ink is quite thin, slightly gritty but flows well and produces exquisitely fine hairlines It appears grey at first but darkens to a velvety blue black on exposure to light and air. Blot’s Iron Gall Ink is carefully prepared with reference to Palatino’s recipe of AD1540 and is a rare opportunity to experience this medieval ink.

"Blots is the most traditional and oldest formula for Iron Gall ink still being made commercially, albeit the most acidic. It's derived from the medieval Palatino formula of 1540. The viscosity is perfect. If you want to pull the hairlines and shades of the Old-Timers, Blots is the way to go, in my experience." - Nick D'Aquanno
