SD1. Yves Leterme: Litterae
SD1. Yves Leterme: Litterae

Small amount of cosmetic damage to the box.. No damge to actual book.

Yves Leterme: Litterae is a unique boxed collection of 24 calligraphic works, finely printed on individual sheets of cover stock, approximately 8-1/4" x 5-7/8". The works are all Latin quotations, each masterfully rendered by Yves in a calligraphically fitting style. The reverse side of each sheet contains the Latin text again along with an English and Dutch translation. The accompanying 36-page book (in English) provides background for the quotes and the calligraphy: Yves is a classical scholar as well as a skilled scribe. The Roman authors, their work, and the chosen quotations are discussed, and Yves provides an account of the creation for each of the 24 calligraphic compositions. Both the works and the small book are full-color and are presented in a stylish gift box.

SD26. A Contemporary Book of the Dead / Phillips
A Contemporary Book of the Dead by John Ransom Phillips. 2009. 328 pp. 9" x 12". Hardback.

USED BOOK: Shelf worn.

The ancient Egyptians were the first to examine the afterlife in a book composed between 1567 and 1085 BC. This collection of funerary texts has historically been referred to as the Book of the Dead or Book of Going Forth by Day. For the Egyptians, the Book of the Dead was a vital part of the quest for immortality. Millennia later, the second Book of the Dead, written in Tibet dating from the eighth century CE, tells a similar tale, but this journey has an entirely different end?rebirth here on earth, instead of in another world. Using watercolors on papyrus?an echo of the Book of the Dead incantations written on papyrus scrolls buried with mummies in ancient Egypt?this collection creates a contemporary interpretation of how human beings contemplate their earthly and spiritual existence. Phillips's work is a vivid visual study into universal and timeless themes of life, love, fear, hope, and sublime happiness that combine into the human experience.
