1LS1-Linda Schneider

1  2

Beautiful, Colorful Calligraphy: Anytime, Anyplace – 1LS1 Linda Schneider (All Levels) Have fun, and share your spirit while you design letters with pointedbrush markers. The class includes an introduction to copperplate, creating shading effects and design concepts. One (any) color small Pitt FaberCastell artist brush pen (it is more like a marker) and one warm gray 1 (# 270) small PITT Faber-Castell artist brush pen. (My favorite color is green gold) (M43, M43-LS, M43-LS2, M97, M97-S12). John Neal carries these and they are fairly inexpensive and last forever. Any other brush markers too, but the two above are very important. Pencil (S142) and layout paper (semi-transparent) (P10-100). ($3)

M43. Pitt Brush Lettering Pens
M43. Pitt Artist Pen Brush.
These Faber-Castell brush pens are pigmented, acid-free, and the individual colors are rated for lightfastness, just like your tubes of gouache and watercolor. Because they dry waterproof, you can letter over them without bleeding. Linda Schneider loves using them to write pointed pen scripts such as Copperplate and Spencerian - with a brush marker!

Colors available:
Dark Chrome Yellow 109, Light Yellow Glaze 104, Scarlet Red 118, Warm Grey 1 270, Cadmium Yellow 107, Black 199, Leaf Green 112, Orange Glaze 113, Phthalo Blue 110, Cobalt Turquoise 153, Sanguine 188, May Green 170, Chromium Green Opaque 174, Cream 102, Deep Scarlet Red 219, Green Gold 268, Ivory 103, Red Pale Geranium Lake 121, Sky Blue (Smalt Blue) 146, Crimson 134 and Cobalt Blue 143.

M43-LS. Pitt Brush Pen Set I
M43-LS. Pitt Brush Pen Set I.

One each of Linda Schneider’s favorite five colors: Warm Grey I (270), Chromium Green Opaque (174), Red Pale Geranium Lake (121), Orange Glaze (113) and Sky (Smalt) Blue (146). The gray makes great shadow strokes for your colorful letters. Pigmented, acid-free, and the individual colors are rated for lightfastness.

M43-LS2. Pitt Brush Pen Set 2
M43-LS2. Pitt Brush Pen Set 2.

One each of five more of Linda Schneider's favorites: Green Gold (268), a beautiful ochre gold; Sanquine (188), a deep rich orange; May Green (170); Crimson (134) and Phthalo Blue (110). I find myself using this combination of markers a lot with the Warm Grey I (270). They are earthy jewel tones; elegant but not flashy. Set does not include Warm Grey.

Please note: Our full print catalog lists this set with Maganese Violet. That color has been discontinued and replaced with Crimson.

M97-S12. Pentel Sign Pen Brush Tip Set of 12
M97. Pentel Sign Pen Brush-tip Marker Set of 12

This pen's brush-like tip is great for quick, fun writing. Linda Schneider uses it for pointed pen scripts such as Copperplate and Spencerian! Water-based ink. Set of 12 colors includes: Black, Brown, Ochre, Gray, Violet, Blue, Sky Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Pink, and Red.

Linda's comments:
"...resembles the same calligraphic line as a nib with the pointed pen. The Pentel pen is easy to carry in a purse or pocket, unlike so many other brush markers on the market. Wonderful to practice lettering outside your studio without having to carry your pen, ink, water etc. I am encouraging calligraphers to write anywhere, anytime, anyplace, like at restaurants (a thank-you with the waiter's name on it), anywhere on the go, on location, even on an airplane."

Don’t limit your script repertoire. Like the pointed pen, the pointed brush makes a wider stroke with pressure. In this instructional manual, Linda Schneider shows how you can write Spencerian and Copperplate with a pointed brush marker (or a brush). Create beautiful and colorful script letters anywhere, anytime without having to deal with liquid ink. One section covers brush-written ornamental flourishes. Linda’s favorite brush markers for script are Pitt Brush Pens (M43, M43-LS, M43-LS2) and a Pentel Sign Pen (M97).

DVD23. Off-Hand Flourishing: Techniques for Ornamental
Penmanship by Michael Sull. DVD.106 minutes.

Michael covers basic tools and materials: pen points, oblique holders, papers. He continues with instruction on preparing and using colored and gold inks, including mixing a sepia ink from vermilion sumi & Higgins Eternal; using Dr. Martin's Bleed Proof White; and Schmincke metallic gouaches.

The "off-hand" instruction begins with the primary flourishing strokes, and then Michel presents the basic steps for cartouches, scrolls, border designs, quills, birds, title flourishing, accent flourishes, and creative patterns. The DVD finishes with a selection of over 50 different historical designs by a range of master penmen. It's the closest thing to having Michael in the room teaching you!
