Roman And Foundational Letterforms

ROMAN AND FOUNDATIONAL LETTERFORMS – Marian Gault

Roman capitals, with their rules for proportion, have remained the basis for all styles of lettering to the present time. The letters carved on the Trajan Column, still standing in Rome, are considered the classic example and the basis for all other lettering, even though it does not contain “H”, “J”, “K”, “U”, “W”, “Y”, and “Z”. Modern scribes have designed their own Roman capitals for the missing letters using guidelines from the rest of the Trajan alphabet, with varying results, which can sometimes be a bit confusing. Since the Roman majuscules do not have a set alphabet designed to use with them for lower case (minuscule) lettering, several styles have been adapted for that purpose. In this class, both classic Roman and Foundational lettering will be demonstrated, explained, and discussed. Learning both of these hands will improve basics, such as spacing and proportion of letters, will give you a better understanding of other styles of writing which you may have learned or use, and give you an appreciation of their classic beauty and similarity. Being familiar with the use of a broad-edged pen is very helpful. Explanatory handouts and guide sheets will be provided.

H113. Turned Wood Straight Holder.

Choose from three beautiful styles:
The Ornamental Wood Holder has intricate ornamental turnings inspired by those on the Century Penholders.

The Ebony Wood Holder has the same design as the Ornamental version but is made out of a very dark (almost black) African hardwood. This version is slightly heavier than the other versions.

The Tapered Wood Holder has a finely tapered classic shape. All Tapered are the same dark brown/black color.

The Zanerian Wood Holder has a slimly tapering shaft and a teardrop finial.

FP68. Pilot Parallel Pens Modified to New Sizes
FP68. New Parallel Pen Sizes (These sizes are not made by Pilot.)

Add these additional pens to your Parallel Pen collection:
1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4.5mm.

We have the 1.5mm cut down to 1.0mm, the 2.4 cut to 2mm, the 3.8 cut to 3mm and the 6mm cut to 4.5mm. (Pilot does not warrant these modified pens, but John Neal Bookseller does.)

The new 1mm (nominal) is the perfect size for addressing wedding invitations -- though the thick & thin contrast is less than with a dip pen. It is a bit larger than 1.0mm. (You can use the .5mm edge of the pen for fine lines.)

We also have a small selection of pens that were cut too small. Limited supply of 1.5mm, 1.75mm, 2.25mm, 2.5mm, 3.75mm, 4.0mm, 4.15mm, 4.35mm

Each includes one red and one black cartridge and a cleaning bladder.

FP68-S Pilot Parallel Pen New Sizes Set of Four Pens is currently unavailable for ordering.

N93. Hunt 22 Nib (22B)
Hunt 22 Extra Fine

A very popular and dependable bronze-finish nib that is great for Copperplate, Spencerian, and other pointed-pen scripts. The Hunt 22 has good flexibility -- not too flexible, not too stiff and can produce very thin hairlines and good swells. The nib works for x-heights of 3/16"-1/16". It has a sharp point but will work on slightly textured surfaces, though it will have a tendency to catch on upstrokes on those papers. Compared to the Gillott 303, the Hunt 22 point is less sharp, and it has more stiffness, so more pressure will be required to create thick shades (swells).

Hunt 22 is used by both beginners and professional scribes. HUNT EXTRA FINE 22 is stamped on the nib. The nib is sometimes called Hunt 22B. This nib is part of the JNB Pointed Nib Samplers (N154 and N117-1).

For more information about Hunt pointed nibs, click here.

Vintage Hunt 22 nibs (N93-V) are also available. When they were made, many decades ago, a higher quality of steel and craftmanship was employed in nib manufacture. They have similar characteristics, but are of a better quality.

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

Four sizes available:

2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
6.0 oz (180ml)

"The Cotton Comp paper is now my favorite, as it is more
translucent and letters can be traced through it more easily than through layout paper, yet it has more substance than tracing paper."
