Engrossing Text

ENGROSSING TEXT – Vivian Mungall

This class will give you an opportunity to learn several styles of engrossing text. Engrossing text is not one defined lettering style but rather a term used for the plainer broad lettering used extensively for the body lettering in certificates, scrolls and resolutions. This style of lettering was used from the late 1800’s thru the 1900’s by lettering professionals because of the easy reading qualities, beauty and speed. The letters were made with a broad-edge pen and sometimes carefully retouched with a fine pen. The forms, especially the capitals, could be simple or elaborate. Engrossing text was one of the classes taught at schools like the Zanerian College.

Skill Level: All

Supplies:

Favorite black ink (I08),

pen nibs the size of a Speedball C2 (N09) in a holder (H113),

layout paper transparent enough to see guidelines underneath (P09),

pencil,

 centering ruler (S425),

eraser (E13),

20-30 word quotation.

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

H113. Turned Wood Straight Holder
H113. Turned Wood Straight Holder.

Choose from three beautiful styles:
The Ornamental Wood Holder has intricate ornamental turnings inspired by those on the Century Penholders.

The Ebony Wood Holder has the same design as the Ornamental version but is made out of a very dark (almost black) African hardwood. This version is slightly heavier than the other versions.

The Tapered Wood Holder has a finely tapered classic shape. All Tapered are the same dark brown/black color.

The Zanerian Wood Holder has a slimly tapering shaft and a teardrop finial.

Each style has the standard metal nib gripper and overall length of 6.5-6.75". Quantity discount at 12+.

S425. 18in Centering Ruler
18in Aluminum Centering Ruler.

One side is a centering ruler with zero at the center and the measurements (in inches) extending in both directions. The other side is a regular ruler, one edge in inches, the other in millimeters.

How do you letter text centered? Make a guideline sheet for your piece. Add the vertical center line to your piece. Place paper over the guidelines and carefully letter your text, line-by-line, starting at the left margin. Use the centering ruler or centering guide to mark the center of each line. Using a craft knife, cut the lines into strips. Place a second sheet of paper over your guidelines and use a glue stick (removable is best) to make a paste up. Line up your center marks on the center line of the guidesheet. Now place your guide sheet over your paste-up and mark the start and finish of each line. Remove the paste-up and use your guidesheet to create the finished piece with the lines centered.
