Fun With Wax & Watercolor Pencils

FUN WITH WAX & WATERCOLOR PENCILS – Bob Hurford

The Colored Pencil Society of America states on its website (www.cpsa.org) that both water soluble pencils and wax pencils are considered colored pencils for the purpose of artwork being accepted into their International Exhibitions. In Fun with Wax and Watercolor Pencils, we will take full advantage of this idea. We’re going to draw and paint some lowers. I have chosen images in the yellow-red-orange end of the spectrum so you won’t have to buy so many pencils. A couple of blues are included so we can make some browns and we’ll need a green or two for stems and leaves. Notice that black is not included. We’ll make our own black. I like the Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils by Faber-Castell as they cover well and have an array of 120 colors. There are other watercolor pencil brands and these may be used. Make sure they are artist’s quality, not student quality. If you like Derwent’s Inktense Pencils, they may be used, too. Note that Inktense pencils are not watercolor, per se, but ink that sets permanently when dry. For wax pencils, I am a big fan of the Prismacolor line. A rainbow of 150 colors, soft, buttery smooth, and they cover very well. There are other brands, as well, Derwent Coloursoft and Lyra Rembrandt, to name two. Whatever you choose, make sure they are also artist’s grade, not student grade. In both wax and watercolor pencils, student grade pencils are sure to disappoint in both coverage and brightness of color.

Skill Level: All

Supplies:

Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils: 107 Cadmium Yellow; 113 Orange Glaze; 145 Light Phthalo Blue; 166 Grass Green; 192 Indian Red; 223 Deep Red.(PL16)

Prismacolor Wax Pencils: PC916 Canary Yellow; PC937 Tuscan Red; PC922 Poppy Red; PC908 Dark Green; PC989 Chartreuse; PC901 Indigo Blue; PC919 Non-Photo Blue; PC 938 White; PC1077 Colorless Blender. (PL05)

Prismacolor Col-Erase Pencils (clay based instead of wax and may be easily erased and great for the initial contour drawing): #20059 Light Gray (PL07).

Prismacolor Verithin Pencils (very hard pencils that have their use): #734 White. (S818)

PAPER: 140# HOT PRESS!!! Arches, Fabriano, etc., are good. Five sheets, 7x11 (cut an 11x14 sheet in half). Make sure the sheet selected is at least 140#. Thinner paper will not take multiple layers of color. (PA82-7)

TRACING PAPER: To transfer supplied designs to your watercolor paper. Two sheets, 8½ x 11 will do (P43).

OTHER USEFUL TOOLS: Many items listed here are no doubt in your art box already.

Camel-hair brush: By nature, wax pencils leave crumbs. A camel-hair brush will gently remove the crumbs so they don’t smear.

Pencil sharpener for wax pencils and an X-acto Knife to sharpen watercolor pencils. We won’t use a regular pencil sharpener on watercolor pencils (S417, S130).

Scotch tape: the best eraser for wax pencils.

Watercolor paint brushes in sizes 0, 2, and 4 (BR28, BR55, BR26). If you prefer using a waterbrush, bring it (FP93).

Paper towels for cleaning your paint brushes and testing color for wet-on-wet.

A sheet or two of Kleenex for polishing your final drawing (paper towels are too rough for polishing). Last, and certainly not least: Loctite Super Glue, Gel Control. While sharpening your wax pencils, you will occasionally break a point wasting a half-inch or more of color. Never fails. I will show you how to fix that point with super glue. It’s quick and very easy.

BR28. W&N Series #7 Watercolor Brush
Series 7 fulfills the essential qualities that define the finest watercolor brush for artists: Point: The brush comes to a crisp point which is maintained during use. Snap & Spring: The brush snaps crisply back into shape with the right degree of spring to allow the artist superior control between the brush and painting surface. Flow Control: The color flows evenly and consistently from the point, with enough color carrying capacity in the belly of the brush to allow flowing gestural strokes. For artists who appreciate exquisite quality and longevity, there is no other brush than the Series 7. Today, just as in 1866, the Series 7 is made for those who understand that the quality of the brush will be reflected in the quality of their work.

BR26. W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush
W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush, Round, Short Handle

For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose watercolor work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess excellent color holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability. Recommended by Michael Sull.

High quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for watercolor and suitable for use with acrylic. For watercolor media, while today's synthetic brushes perform excellently, pure sable still has the edge. With a blend you can get performance that is close to sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in Sceptre Gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high-quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes, and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.
