Denis Brown

Supplies
Layout bond (P20, P09)
Tracing paper (P43)
Ruler (S270) or rolling ruler (S385, S730), triangle (S464)
Pencils, various hardnesses (2B, HB, 2H, etc.), (S142)
Eraser (E13)
Dip pens in assorted sizes, (Brause (N02), Mitchell (N04), or Speedball (N09))
Pen holders (H104, H113)
Black non-waterproof ink, such as Higgins Eternal (I08)
Masking tape or drafting tape (S412)
Scissors, X-Acto knife or snap-off knife (S417)
Cutting mat (S504)
Water container (S784)
Ink rags or tissues
Notebook
Vellum, if you have any (optional, as the supply fee will provide you a full slunk calfskin or alternatively two half skins) (S197)
Bring a prepared calligraphy layout, size including margins: exactly 5″ x 8″ (13 x 20 cm). This will be written onto vellum during the class. There will be time in the workshop to refine the design but advance preparation will be an important head start. The design may be simple, perhaps a few lines of text plus author accreditation, with consideration given to letterform, layout and color. It may be either portrait or landscape format.
Gouache paints (Click HERE for our Gouaches) and palettes (S679)
Any extra tools you may need if you are adding illustration or painting to your design
Medium and fine grades of sandpaper or “wet or dry” abrasive papers (S316, S317)
Finely powdered Pumice (Dental grade) (S319)
Finely powdered Gum Sandarac plus either a clean bristle paintbrush or a “pounce bag” to apply it (S123)
Scalpel with curved blade, e.g. surgical blade no.10 (S791, S793)
Steel straight edge or steel ruler (S270)
The following supplies are all part of product S977:
A sheet of silicone release paper at least 13″ x 10″ (33 x 25 cm). This is a non-stick paper as sometimes used for lining of baking tins.
Two pressing boards cut from 1/2 inch thick, melamine-faced chipboard or similar, 10″ x 13″ (25 x 33 cm) each
1 piece exterior grade plywood, 1/4 ” thick, cut to 5″ x 8″
6 pieces of blotting paper, cut to 10″ x 13″ (25 x 33 cm) (S261-11)
A waterproof plastic sheet, 10″ x 13″ (25 x 33 cm), e.g. cut out from a plastic bag

A piece of white or ivory colored conservation quality mount board neatly cut to 5″ x 8″ (13 x 20 cm). Also bring some off-cuts from this mount board.
Heavy/thick colored paper, at least 5″ x 8″ (13 x 20 cm), to line the back of your stretched vellum design—a color matching your prepared layout is good.
PVA glue plus 3/4″ (2 cm) glue brush. (S340) A 3/4″ decorator’s bristle paintbrush may be used.
A plastic bottle with a trigger-vaporizer-top. (This is to spray water vapor to moisten materials.) (S836)
Watercolor and/or gouache (black, white, plus 2 or 3 colors of your choosing), Winsor & Newton or any other similar (good quality) brand such as Linel, Schminke etc. Black gouache from Talens is not very suitable to write with. (Click HERE for our Gouaches & Watercolors)

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

Your Price $5.75

S412. Drafting Tape
Drafting Tape
3/4: wide, 400" length

Drafting tape is a less sticky version of masking tape and is for temporary taping. Use it to attach your paper to your drawing board or table. With many papers it will peel off without damaging the paper. You should slowly and carefully peel of the tape. Also, leave the items taped only as long as necessary. These kinds of tapes can become permanently adhered to surfaces over time, especially with exposure to bright light.
