C-9 Otherworldly Earthiness: Oldrich Menhart
Carl Rohrs

Supplies
Tracing paper (P43)
Ruler or rolling ruler (S270, S385, S730)
Pencils, various hardnesses (2B, HB, 2H, etc.) (S142)
Dip pens in assorted sizes, (Brause (N02), Mitchell (N04), or Speedball (N09))
Pen holders  (H104, H113)
Layout bond, 11″ x 17″ (A3). The best of which is Gilbert Bond. John Neal: (P70), or something with a bit of tooth, plus any fancier papers you might want to work on: Canson Ingres or Mi Tientes, Bugra, Diploma Parchment, watercolor, etc. (Click HERE for our Fine Papers)
Pencils and/or colored pencils and pens (Uniball, Micron, etc.) that you like to draw with, for the decorated letters (PL05, M76, M17)
Eraser (E13)
Pens: Large folded brass flat pen, 1/4″, 5/16″ or 3/8″ ( 6, 8, or 10 mm). Horizon is ideal; Automatic is too sharp, but will work with a light touch, and/or a 6mm Parallel Pen (FP67); plus any other favorite pens, Brause (N02), Mitchell (N04), etc. You may want a small flat pen for drawn, decorated letters with a calligraphic line.
Ink: Non-waterproof ink (Higgins Eternal (I08), Higgins Sepia (I121), walnut (I53), Noodler’s (I123), anything like that.) Look out for the words ‘Indian’, ‘permanent’, even ‘Sumi’; they all clog the slits. Bring a bottle of ink even if your only pens are Parallel pens. (ClickHERE for our Inks)
Water container (S784)
Ink rags or tissues
Notebook
Optional, in case you are moved to cut paper: masking tape or drafting tape, scissors, X-Acto knife, cutting mat (S504)
Also optional: a flat brush, flat palette (S679) and gouache, in case you want to try Oldrich Menhart out with a brush.

"Calligraphers in Portland [Oregon] have been using Gilbert Bond for years and years and LOVE it totally. My students and I have decided that 'we are worth it' and use Gilbert for practice. We think using a better paper makes our calligraphy practice seem more important (and practice is so important!). I thoroughly recommend the paper; it would be hard to recommend Gilbert Bond too highly!" - Carol DuBosch
