Roman Capitals - from Formal to Informal

1  2

Elmo van Slingerland: Roman Capitals from Formal to Informal
  • A3 size paper/11" x 17" (80 or 90 gsm paper pad, or A3 Fabriano 90g/m2 sketch pad). Not too smooth paper (very difficult with practicing), but paper with a slight texture/tooth is better. Beneath the practice paper we will use a grid, so be sure your paper is not too heavy (it must show through) (P70)
  • Some sheets of nice paper hot or cold pressed, prefer (approx. 11" x 17") (PS42, PS110)
  • Good quality artist watercolour paint and/or gouache, walnut ink or stick ink. Click HERE for gouache, (I53-2.5)
  • Broad edged pens in different sizes and good penholders. I prefer that you take a Speedball (C2) and Mitchell (#3) + reservoir, but don't hesitate to take also other brands if you have a preference (size about 3 mm, but take some different sizes with you), and (only if you have already) an Automatic pen and a ruling pen. (N09, N04, N27, N22)
  • Pencil (PL21)
  • Eraser (E13)
  • Ruler (S271)
  • Rags (S817)
  • Brush (cheap) for mixing your paint and filling your pen (BR43)
  • A plate/saucer or whatever to mix your paint on (S679)
  • A jar for water (S1005)

Recommended Books:
"Nothing specific but if I have to suggest, I would say everything about Hermann Zapf, Schriftkunst by Albert Kapr, Calligraphy by Claude Mediavilla."
  • B4127. Scripsit 37.2 & 38.1 (Double Issue): Hermann Zapf: A Life in Letters.
  • B3796. What Our Lettering Needs by Rick Cusick.
  • B1000. Schriftkunst/Letterart by Karlgeorg Hoefer.
  • B2132. Calligraphy by Claude Mediavilla.

  • B4104. De Collectie

"Calligraphers in Portland [Oregon] have been using Gilbert Bond for years and years and LOVE it totally. My students and I have decided that 'we are worth it' and use Gilbert for practice. We think using a better paper makes our calligraphy practice seem more important (and practice is so important!). I thoroughly recommend the paper; it would be hard to recommend Gilbert Bond too highly!" - Carol DuBosch
