Calligraphy in Blossom

Marina Soria: Calligraphy in Blossom
BRUSHES:
  • Our main tool will be the Japanese brush, sizes small, medium and large.
  • Medium-sized brushes for mixing colours and loading your nibs. (BR43)
PENS:
  • You may bring some of your favourite tools - ruling pen, cola pen, folded pen, and a variety of smaller sized edged pens or copperplate nibs for small writing. (N22, N155, N30)
INK/COLOURS:
  • Walnut ink (S449)
  • Olive green Winsor & Newton watercolour (WNWC1)
  • Choose 2 or 3 other colours, or a colour watercolour palette you would like to work with. (WNWC)
PAPER:
  • Your favourite layout paper - you may bring a cheap quality watercolour paper to practice on. Characteristics:
  • Weight around 270 gsm (125 lbs).
  • Size, around A3 (14 x 17 in)
  • Texture: cold press, medium or smooth surface
  • If it is glued on four sides, unblock it in advance.
  • Our final piece will be a concertina book so we will need a good quality paper that is at least 76 x 56 cm (22½" x 30").
  • You may get a bigger sheet, 50 x 70 cm (40" X 27½"), that would also work beautifully for a bigger scale book.
  • A couple of sheets of Rives BFK or Arches Text Wove 140 lbs, or something similar. (PS107, PS01)
  • To build our covers we need - one sheet of Fabriano, Strathmore, Arches or Canson Mi- Teintes colour paper. (When choosing this colour remember to include the same matching colour in a gouache or watercolour.) You could even bring a printed, marbled, Washi Japanese or paste paper to use as the cover. (PS61)
  • BINDING:
  • Two pieces of soft cardboard, A3, 2 or 3mm thick (11" X 17") to create the covers.
  • PVA glue and a brush to apply it on to the covers. Spare paper to use when gumming. (S340, S832)
  • Perhaps you would like to bring a piece of cloth or light fabric to make a Furoshiki wrapping to our book. Or/and one meter long colour ribbon matching your cover paper, but in a different tone, if you want to finish the binding with a ribbon. (BC-LG)
  • For the second book we will do, a simple Japanese binding, we need needle and thread as well as an awl and little hooks to keep the paper in place while binding. (S213, S825, S347)
MISCELLANEOUS:
  • Real flowers, branches, leaves and a simple flower pot to create a very basic Ikebana
  • Small notebook for taking notes
  • Pencil or felt pens for quick writing
  • Palette for mixing colours (S679)
  • Paper towels or rags (S817)
  • Tape (S931)
  • Scissors (S835)
  • Good cutter
  • Glue stick (S391)
  • Eraser (E13)
  • Long straight edge metal ruler (S271)
  • A selection of four short poems, haikus, quotes or even your own words will do. If related to the nature theme, then that will be most appropriate with our work
OPTIONAL (or stuff we may or may not use):
  • Liquid resist or masking fluid (S198)
  • Chalk pastels
  • Your own music with headphones if you wish

N155. Luthis Pens.

Folded metal pens for expressive writing and formal calligraphy. The tips are aluminum; the handles are unfinished wood. Approximately 6" long. Four styles are offered; each writes differently. The pens are from Argentina; they are labeled with their Spanish names.

"They give great edges and hairlines and flow beautifully. For as thin an edge as it has, it's amazingly stable. And the thin handle makes manipulation easy. I can recommend them highly." - Carrie Imai

Moth (Polillita). A smaller version of Butterfly (Mariposa).
Fan (Abanico). The writing edge curve is similar to a standard folded pen or calligraphy ruling pen.

N30. Folded Ruling Pen
Folded Ruling Pen

Introduced at Letterforum in 1995, this innovative lettering tool has been popular ever since. Use it to produce tight "brush lettering" with a pen or for wild, fun, expressive lettering. These are the originals made by Matthew Coffin and highly praised by Carl Rohrs and Peter Thornton as superior to others that are available.

Peter Thornton has his students use our Polishing Paper (S107) to lightly abrade the outer and inner surfaces of the Folded Pen. This allows the ink to spread out on the pen instead of beading up.

PS68. Papyrus Full Sheet 12.5in X 17in
PS68. Papyrus Full Sheet 12.5in X 17in
Handmade in Egypt. Approx. 12.5" x 17" (32x43 cm).

There are few sources for buying papyrus in the USA. This ancient writing surface is made by pounding together two layers of strips cut lengthwise from the rush, Cyperus papyrus. After drying in the sun, the writing surface is smoothed with pumice. This protopaper was used for over 3000 years before being replaced by parchment and paper.

Some surface texture but accepts the ink well. The strips of reed are readily apparent in this translucent sheet. When you purchase our Egyptian papyrus, there is no extra/paper shipping for the US. Normal shipping charges apply

Quantity Price Breaks at 2 sheets, 10 sheets, 20 sheets or more
