The Empty Space, Womb of Shape

Marina Soria: The Empty Space, Womb of Shape
You will need to bring a couple of your favourite experimental alphabets you could have developed in some other workshop or a formal calligraphy with a personal twist. Remember that we will not create an alphabet but work with the space and composition issues.
PENS:
  • Some of your favorite tools: ruling pen, cola pen, folded pen, Automatic pens, nibs and any tool you may have used to perform your personal alphabet. (N22, N208, N155, N27)
BRUSHES:
  • Medium-sized brushes (# in between 3 and 6) and a thin one to draw contours or outline. (BR38)
INK/COLOURS:
  • Bottle of black sumi or 2-3 single tubes of preferably dark colour gouaches or watercolours, of your choice. (I70)
  • White gouache. (Click HERE for our selection of gouache)
PAPER:
  • Layout paper. Our final piece will be a sculpture book so we will need a good quality paper. (P11-100)
You have two possibilities, either:
  • Two sheets of Rives BFK or Arches Text Wove, or something like these two, under 140 lbs, or (PS107, PS01)
  • Watercolour Paper Block. Characteristics:
    • Weight around 270 gsm (125 lbs) below 300 gsm (under 140 lbs)
    • Size, around A3 or slightly smaller (14" x 17" in or 9" x 12")
    • Texture: cold press, medium or smooth surface.
    • Separate sheets not glued on all four sides or separate them before our class
BINDING:
  • One needle for a simple Japanese binding (S213)
  • Thread, matching the colour gouache you have chosen (S825)
  • Awl (S347)
  • Little hooks to hold paper in place while binding
  • A straight edge metal ruler
MISCELLANEOUS...
A portable light table would be very useful, if you don't have one you could bring a portable easel with a light underneath to be able to trace in a comfortable way.
  • Pencil (PL38)
  • Colour pencil matching the chosen colours (PL05)
  • Eraser (E13)
  • Palette for mixing colours (S679)
  • Paper towels (S817)
  • Tape (S412)
  • Scissors (S835)
  • Good cutter
  • X-Acto knife (S417, S130)
  • Glue stick (S391)
  • Felt pens for quick writing and contour delineate. (M17)
  • A selection of two short poems, haikus, quotes or even your own words will do and you may also bring your own music with headphones if you wish.
OPTIONAL (or stuff we may or may not use)...
  • If we have time we can make a mobile. We will need a meter long ribbon (39.3701") in matching colours with your palette, glue stick, cutter and a circle puncher 7,62 cm (3")

    N208. Dreaming Dogs Ruling Pen
    N208. Dreaming Dogs Ruling Pen.

Dreaming Dogs ruling pens are designed with the traditional components of the tools already found on the market, with additional new features.

The lightness of the tool and its balance were prioritized, resulting in a comfortable grip and allowing for both fluid and gestural strokes.

Dreaming Dogs ruling pens are crafted in stainless steel with elastic properties, a material that has excellent strength and durability and that does not rust. It is easy to clean and provides lightness, flexibility and accuracy in strokes.

The wooden pen handles are handmade. The assembly of these pens is entirely manual, with the refinement and finishing done one by one to get the perfect fit. Varnish layers waterproof the handle and make the pens more durable and easier to clean.

    N155. Luthis Pens
    N155. Luthis Pens.

Folded metal pens for expressive writing and formal calligraphy. The tips are aluminum; the handles are unfinished wood. Approximately 6" long. Four styles are offered; each writes differently. The pens are from Argentina; they are labeled with their Spanish names.

"They give great edges and hairlines and flow beautifully. For as thin an edge as it has, it's amazingly stable. And the thin handle makes manipulation easy. I can recommend them highly." - Carrie Imai

Butterfly (Mariposa). Has two writing edges.
Moth (Polillita). A smaller version of Butterfly (Mariposa).
Fan (Abanico). The writing edge curve is similar to a standard folded pen or calligraphy ruling pen.
Dragonfly (Libélula). The writing edge has a unique curve that allows you to change writing styles quickly. Carol DuBosch's favorite of the four.

Purchase all four and save: use code N155-S4.

    I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
    Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

    --Clair F., Jan 2011.

    Four sizes available:

    2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
    6.0 oz (180ml)

15 & 60 oz are temporarily unavailable: arriving Dec 2019
