Thick and Thin

Convention Essential Supply List

Anything that you already have in your bag! Quite simply, nibs, oblique (H23, H48, H51, H61) or straight (H46, H60, H62, H65, H78, H79) holders, favorite inks, graph paper (P21, P23) (whatever size – 8 x 8 or 10 x 10 ) or any of the great Rhodia pads. A light layout pad can be put over the graph lines or work right on the graph pads. I love McCaffery's (I37) and Old World Inks, but your preference.

H23. Hunt Oblique Penholder
Speedball Oblique Pen holder

Black plastic hourglass shape penholder with offset for nib. For copperplate and Spencerian. The offset helps righthanders with the letter slant. Most lefthanders use a straight holder not this oblique holder. However, some use an oblique holder.

These pointed nibs work in this holder: Hunt 22, Hunt 56, Hunt 99, Hunt 100, Hunt 101, Hunt 103, Hunt 104,
Gillott 170, Gillott 303, Gillott 404, Gillott 1950
Hiro 700, Esterbrook 354, Brause Rose Nib.
The Nikko G nib will work okay, but the holder is not ideal for this nib.

Gillott 659 does NOT work with this holder; use H75 (Gillott Holder #51) instead.

The EF Principal does not work in this holder. See H48 Ziller Oblique Holder (Size) PRIN, and both the Blackwell Holders H50, H61

H48. Peerless/Ziller Oblique Holder (Grey Plastic)
Ziller Oblique Pen Holder

These less expensive oblique pen holders are pre-adjusted for our most popular pointed nibs. Metal flange, grey plastic handle. Specify Gillott 303, Gillott 404, Brause 66EF, Hunt 101, Nikko G, EF Principal. This holder can be adjusted for virtually any nib. Please let us know the nib you use & we will pick the closest holder.

For the Hiro 40, order PRIN

H51. Century Oblique Penholder
Century Oblique Holder

These gorgeous turned wood pen holders have a metal flange. They are made to hold the Nikko G and similar sized nibs). They can be adjusted with needle nosed pliers to fit other nibs. Wood Penholder.

If you would like to purchase a holder that is fitted for a different sized nib, please see item number H53.

H61. Blackwell Plastic Handle Oblique
Plastic Handle Blackwell Oblique Pen Holder

Black plastic hourglass penholder with the same brass flange for holding the nibs. The brass work is not as finely finished, but is just as functional. Works with crowquill, Brause 66EF and almost all other nibs.

A remarkably simple design that holds most pen points for
Spencerian and Copperplate. Designed to hold the nib at a less steep slant angle for ease of upstrokes. Also available with a brass and wood handle.

(Works with most all nibs except the very largest vintage nibs. Earlier holders did not work with the crowquill because the screw was too short. You may request a longer screw which fixes the problem. There is no charge for the longer replacement screw if you have the earlier holder.)

H46. Grey Plastic Pen Holder (114)

Lightweight grey plastic (Caran D’Ache 114) penholder. Now comes with standard ring and four prong gripper mechanism.

The OLD style is no longer available.

H65. Speedball Colored Pen Holders
These new holders have the classic hourglass shape of regular black Speedball Plastic Pen Holders, but they have a durable, double-coated finish that gives them a softer feel. Available in two colors, Garnet and Sapphire. These holders work with Speedball Nibs A, B, C; Hunt 101, 56, 22, 99, 512, 513.

We have found that the plastic on these holders tends to pick up more dust and dirt than others. To clean these holders, we used warm water. We submerged them and rubbed with a paper towel under the water. Some holders needed two or three washings to remove all dirt and dust. After washing, you can let air dry or dry using a lint free cloth.

H78. Thick Wood Pen Holder
H78. Thick Wood Pen Holder

These short, turned hardwood penholders have a thicker grip. If you or your students have arthritis or joint problems, you may find these thicker pen holders easier to use. Some calligraphers also just like a thicker pen holder. Wood color will vary and there will be some variation in shape. Approx 5" length.

P21. JNB Graph Pad 11x17, 50 Sheets
JNB Graph Pad
Light blue grid (8 squares/inch). 28 lb bond. 11"x17". Approx 50 sheets.

A non-bleeding paper that is great for calligraphy. (We use the same paper in our JNB Practice Pads.) Many instructors have their students use this pad in their classes. (It is the pad required by Claude Dieterich for his Academy of Art classes, and also by Ann Miller for her online class.) (For graph with slant lines P01.)

Please choose color: Light or Dark.

Light: This grid does not show on many copiers, shows faintly on others, and usually disappears when you adjust the exposure one setting lighter. If you use a copier to produce your finished art for reproduction, this is the pad for you. This pad is good for jobs done at quick printers.

Dark: For classes, some students may appreciate a slightly darker grid. This is particularly true for adult classes. This is still a light blue grid. Some teachers have commented that their students found the original pad's grid was too light.

6/7.50 each. 12/7.25 each. 24/6.95 each.
