Trust the Process by Shaun Mcniff.

Papers: Graph pad 11x17 (P21); inexpensive smooth layout pad (P10, P11) or drawing pad (not newsprint); (optional) a variety of watercolor paper hot or cold press for use with watercolors (PS42, PS47); 1 sheet of Arches Black Cover stock (PS90); 5 sheets Stonehenge (PS95). We will need the 5 sheets of Stonehenge. Others are optional but bring whatever nice watercolor paper that you like best.
Pens/Pencils/Brushes: ½ inch Automatic pen (N27); ¼ inch Automatic pen (N27) optional; pencil; cheap mixing brushes (BR37); wedged clay shaper (1/2 inch). I'll bring these to share; cheap foam brush 1 inch.
Ink/ Paint: Higgins Eternal black (I08); watercolors (WNxxx) (transparent…several colors); several tubes of acrylic (keep in mind we are doing flowers.)
Misc: Spray bottle/larger size; acrylic gloss medium (I90) liquid not gel; mixing palette (S679, S723); water containers (S731); 1 larger for acrylics like a yogurt container; paper towels; bring short quotation about nature and flower references (magazines, photos, field guides etc…or the real thing!); news¬paper for drying; household sponge.
Pens: Oblique penholder (H48, H50, H51, H52, H60, H61); pointed pen nibs such as Nikko G (N113) or Leonardt Principal (N120) (both of these need a holder that will accommodate their larger size); Hunt 22 (N93) or 56 (N86), or Gillott 303 (N72) or 404 (N74).
Ink: Moon Palace (I70) or McCaffrey's Penman's Ink (I37); black and favorite colors of gouache (WNGxxx).
Paper: When combining penwork with watercolor, hot press watercol¬or paper (PS42, PS47) is recommended, several sheets. Stonehenge also works (PS95). Marker layout pad for practice, such as Canson Pro Marker (P32-9) or Boris (P10), no larger than 10 x 14".
Materials fee: $7

P21. JNB Graph Pad 11x17, 50 Sheets
JNB Graph Pad
Light blue grid (8 squares/inch). 24 lb bond. 11"x17". Approx. 50 sheets.

A non-bleeding paper that is great for calligraphy. (We use the same paper in our JNB Practice Pads.) Many instructors have their students use this pad in their classes.

(For graph with slant lines P01.)

Please choose color: Light or Dark.

Light: This grid does not show on many copiers, shows faintly on others, and usually disappears when you adjust the exposure one setting lighter. If you use a copier to produce your finished art for reproduction, this is the pad for you. This pad is good for jobs done at quick printers.

Dark: For classes, some students may appreciate a slightly darker grid. This is particularly true for adult classes. This is still a light blue grid. Some teachers have commented that their students found the original pad's grid was too light.

PS47. Arches WC HP 140LB 22x30
Arches Watercolor
Hot Press 140lb. 300gsm. 22"x30".

Superior quality, 100% rag, for pen and all techniques with opaque and transparent watercolor. Long used by calligraphers. HP (Hot press) finish is a very smooth sheet that will give a sharp smooth edge to your letters. Cold press watercolor paper can be used for calligraphy, but the letters won't be as crisp. You will see the cold press texture in your lettering. This has always been one of our most popular sheets.

Grain runs parallel to the underlined dimension.

This paper ships separately from books/supplies and requires an extra shipping fee which is NOT included in the price of this product. Add item 'PS00' to your cart after adding large sheets of paper. (click to read details)

PS90. Arches Cover Paper Black
Arches Cover Black
22"x30". 250gsm. Mouldmade in France. 100% cotton. pH neutral, lightly sized, textured surface. 4 deckles. Black.

Laurie Doctor and others recommend this sheet for book and portfolio covers. It folds without cracking. Judy Melvin likes it for her calligraphic painting - however this is NOT the Arches Black that will bleach correctly. When bleach is applied to this new version the paper turns pink (salmon). Grain direction is parallel to underlined dimension.

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

Blackwell Oblique Pen Holder Plastic Handle

Black plastic hourglass penholder with the same brass flange for holding the nibs. The brass work is not as finely finished but is just as functional. Works with small nibs such as the Brause 66EF and almost all other nibs.

A remarkably simple design that holds most pen points for
Spencerian and Copperplate. Designed to hold the nib at a less steep slant angle for ease of upstrokes. Also available with a brass and wood handle.

(Works with most all nibs except the very largest vintage nibs and crowquill nibs.)

N120. Leonardt Principal EF Nib
N120.EF Principal Nib

You can now purchase a modern nib that is equal to the best of the vintage nibs. Brian Walker, a respected pointed pen enthusiast, has worked with a pen manufacturer to duplicate the quality and performance of the legendary Gillott No 1 Principality. The new nib has received rave reviews for both Copperplate and Spencerian. It's flexible and responsive and gives fine hairlines, but is smooth-writing and catches the paper less.
