B152. Ornate Pictorial Calligraphy / Lupfer
Ornate Pictorial Calligraphy By E.A. Lupfer. (1951) 1982. 78pp. 8"x11". Paper.

Instructions and examples of pictorial flourishes: quills, birds, swans, etc. Originally published under the title Fascinating Pen Flourishes. Recommend by Heather Held, Michael Sull and others for the many examples (over 150) from a range of master penmen. For many years, this was the best reference in print, and it is still a valuable one.

The Zanerian Manual of Alphabets and Engrossing. 1981. 140pp. 8"x10.5". Spiral.

At present, a reprint of this book is not in the works (as far as we know). You can include the book on your order, and you will be notified of the book's price when/if it is available again.

Click the image for a preview of the book.

The first 21 pages by E.A. Lupfer provide some of the best Copperplate instruction available. He was a master of the hand. Other engrossing alphabets are shown, as well as many examples of engrossed pieces. Revised & reissued at intervals since it was first published as Zanerian Alphabets in 1895. This latest version is printed on glossy paper. The quality of some images is not as good as others.

B3064. Script Lettering For Artists / Thompson
B3064. Script Lettering for Artists by Tommy Thompson. 2012. 128pp. 6.14" x 9.21". Paper

The book gives the beginner a thorough, straightforward course of instruction, with advice on virtually every facet of the art of script lettering. In his clear and economical presentation, the author tells you how to hold the pen, how the letters should be slanted, how to "build" the letters out of a few primary strokes, the direction of the pen in inking, and every other step of the process. He also deals with the construction of numerals, the flourish and its basic elements, how to correct mistakes, commercial handwriting, etc. and gives a concise introduction to layout and package design. Throughout his account, Thompson stresses materials, tools, and equipment needed and provides exact specifications, brand names, penpoint types and sizes, and the like.
The history of lettering is also briefly sketched, and there are examples from early copybooks, including the work of some of the famous penmen and engravers of history: Bickham, Tompkins, Cocker, Barbedor, and others. In addition, the book offers dozens of illustrations of script work in present-day advertising and packaging, together with samples of various styles (round hand, bâtarde, coulée, free style, and more). All this illustrative material furnishes excellent models for study and practice.

H23. Hunt Oblique Penholder
Speedball Oblique Pen holder

Black plastic hourglass shape penholder with offset for nib. For copperplate and Spencerian. The offset helps righthanders with the letter slant. Most lefthanders use a straight holder not this oblique holder. However, some use an oblique holder.

These pointed nibs work in this holder: Hunt 22, Hunt 56, Hunt 99, Hunt 100, Hunt 101, Hunt 103, Hunt 104,
Gillott 170, Gillott 303, Gillott 404, Gillott 1950
Hiro 700, Esterbrook 354, Brause Rose Nib.
The Nikko G nib will work okay, but the holder is not ideal for this nib.

Gillott 659 does NOT work with this holder; use H75 (Gillott Holder #51) instead.

The EF Principal does not work in this holder. See H48 Ziller Oblique Holder (Size) PRIN, and both the Blackwell Holders H50, H61

H61. Blackwell Plastic Handle Oblique Holder
Blackwell Oblique Pen Holder Plastic Handle

Black plastic hourglass penholder with the same brass flange for holding the nibs. The brass work is not as finely finished but is just as functional. Works with small nibs such as the Brause 66EF and almost all other nibs.

A remarkably simple design that holds most pen points for
Spencerian and Copperplate. Designed to hold the nib at a less steep slant angle for ease of upstrokes. Also available with a brass and wood handle.

(Works with most all nibs except the very largest vintage nibs and crowquill nibs.)
