Dr. Joseph M. Vitolo

Script in the Copperplate Style
An introduction to script in the Copperplate style. The fundamentals of shaded script will be taught with particular emphasis on the basic shapes and letterforms that make up this beautiful hand.
Skill Level: All

The Zanerian Manual is the best instructional book (based on the quality of exemplars) on Engrosser's script ever published. (B145. $39.95)
Joe also recommends these two books:
B2476. FW Tamblyn's Home Instruction in Penmanship. Paper Spiral $24.95
B2470. An Elegant Hand: The Golden Age of American Penmanship and Calligraphy. Hardcover $59.95. Iampeth pre-order price $56.95

Supplies: Oblique Penholder (Using a straight holder is possible for some left handed calligraphers.) (H95, H96, H51, H52) Flexible Nibs: Modern Nibs, Leonardt Principal and Nikko G Nibs (N120, N130). For vintage nibs, the Esterbrook 357 and 358 are currently available on eBay or from John Neal (N115, N116). Ink: There are several high quality inks currently being manufactured for pointed pen work. Examples are McCaffery's Penman's Inks (I37), Walker's Copperplate Ink, Norton's Walnut Drawing Ink (I53). Inkwell (S620, S800, S304, S276): The McCaffery and Walker inks come in a small glass jar that work very well. A separate container or small Dixie cup containing a sponge for water to clean the nib. Paper: any good inkjet printer paper (P25) (such as Kodak's Brite White 24 pound inkjet paper or its equivalent.) Preprinted guidelines: These are available on the IAMPETH website at www.iampeth. com/lessons/guidesheets/VitoloScriptGuidelinesFromVideoClips.pdf.
**Bring a small tube of toothpaste and some Q-tips to prepare new nibs for use. A detailed explanation of how to prepare your nibs will be presented.

Click the image for a preview of the book.

The first 21 pages by E.A. Lupfer provide some of the best Copperplate instruction available. He was a master of the hand. Other engrossing alphabets are shown, as well as many examples of engrossed pieces. Revised & reissued at intervals since it was first published as Zanerian Alphabets in 1895. This latest version is printed on glossy paper. The quality of some images is not as good as others.
