Engrosser 's Text: Broad pen text lettering for beginners Skill Level: All
Whether you have never picked up a broad pen or need some brushing up, this class will be a great starting point as we learn Engrosser's Text. With the lowercase style of a German Text and the capital flair of a French Round Hand, this unique broad pen hand was often used in the body of engrossed works of art. Our full day will be spent starting from the beginning; learning how to hold the pen correctly and on to practicing the basic strokes necessary to build the alphabet. We will learn the lowercase and capital letters and their proportions, working towards letter spacing for words and sentences. Practice, practice, practice is the key. No need to be intimidated here, as this class is created for the beginner!

Supplies: Holder of your choice for broad pen nibs (H62, H71, H77). Look for something comfortable. Nibs: 2 sizes: 2-1/2 mm & 2 mm Brause Nibs (N02, N06) Ink: Moon Palace or Best Bottle Sumi or your favorite ink (I70, I43). 2 Small Containers: 1 for ink and the other for water (S276, S620, S803). Cloth, or clean lint free rag or towel, or your favorite for wiping your pen. Paper: Scrap paper, and paper you can see guidelines through such as Rhodia (P53). Handouts will include guidelines. Your Zanerian Manual as a reference (your bible for the convention).

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

Four sizes available:

2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
6.0 oz (180ml)

I43. Best Bottle Sumi Ink
Best Bottle Sumi Ink

This popular Japanese sumi ink is good both for beginners and for professional work. Smooth, rich black. Hard to find. One of the popular sumi inks for calligraphy. 6.75 oz, 200 ml bottle.

"The Best Bottle Sumi Ink truly is the best bottle. You can write three to four times longer with a pointed pen nib before the ink dries between the tines enough to alter the writing (this compared to Moon Palace)." C. M.

My test for any ink is to see if it will produce sharp thick and thin strokes at less than one sixteenth inch body height with a #6 Mitchell nib. Stick ink passes that test while most bottled inks don't, especially waterproof inks including sumi ones. The brown bottle sumi [Best Bottle] is non-waterproof, and I find it is better than others. –S.W.

Dappen Dish / Dampen Dish.

These small wide mouthed glass containers with relatively heavy bases are ideal for holding gesso, ink or gouache.

Peter Thornton used a dampen dish to reconstitute prepared gesso in a gilding workshop that John attended. He put a piece of prepared gesso in one of these small shot glasses, added drops of water, and got the gesso to the correct consistency. He then applied the gesso to his quill or pen from the dappen dish.
