The Art of Musical Notation , Part One
The Art of Musical Notation workshop addresses the unique concerns of the visual artist when writing music, to go beyond simply notating correct pitches in the correct key, and to create something of visual beauty using musical forms and structure. This summer we will explore Part One of The Art of Musical Notation?a survey of early western musical notation, beginning with Palestrina in Rome, and ending with George Bickham in London. Each participant will be given copies of historical samples plus a template for creating a decorative musical notation motif suitable for holiday cards or other design purposes.
Skill Level: All

Supplies: Graph paper (P22); Plain layout paper (P10-50); Ruler with metal edge (S270); Hard Pencil (S142) and kneadable eraser (E09); Colored Pencils: red, black, blue; Micron pens: red and black .05 (M17); Brause music staff nibs (N39). Optional: Music Notation automatic pen (N28) from John Neal(about $11, and worth every penny);metallic pencils, gel pens and Fine-tec gold (S741) for embellishment.

N39. Brause 5-Line Music Nib
N39. Brause 5 Line Music Nib

Originally designed for composers and musicians for creating the staff where the notes are place. Calligraphers use these 5-line pens for fun and expressive forms. This nib is trickier to use than a regular broad-edged one. You should always write on a padded surface and keep the full nib on the paper. A free flowing ink may help. Width of whole nib 7/16".

NOTE The 5-line Automatic Pen is much easier to use than this nib. Even though it is more expensive, many of our customers have found it to be a much better tool.

Your Price $3.60

N28. Automatic 5-Line Pen
Automatic Pen 5 Line.

Designed to produce lines for sheet music, calligraphers use it to produce light, five-stroked letters. Total width 1/2 inch.

See N27 for Regular and Scroll Automatic Pens
These poster pens are made of a non-rust nickel silver with a plastic handle. They produce very fine thins. Use them with the tooth blade uppermost. Clean with warm water after use. A new pen should be filled and worked gently on paper
until the color (ink) flows. Any possible sign of scratching will soon wear off with use.
