Linda Schneider

Designing with Flourishes using the Pointed Pen—
Ornate Pictorial Calligraphy, in the past, has been recognized for its beauty in fine flourished loops depicting birds, feathers and scrolls. I will show how to design contemporary images such as ladies with an attitude, elaborate cakes and fancy flowers in vases-even some fancy high heel shoes-using a similar ornate pictorial calligraphic style. Basic flourishing will be covered first and demonstrated along with the contemporary images. As an added feature, I will demonstrate how to incorporate the calligraphic designs into a card format, so each calligrapher can use their art to make their own collection for personal correspondence or to give as gifts. My goal is for every calligrapher to have some success and a solid foundation of what was taught so that as they return to their studios they will enjoy practicing ornate pictorial calligraphy and use their own unique designs.

Ornate Pictorial Calligraphy By E.A. Lupfer. (1951) 1982. 78pp. 8"x11". Paper.

Instructions and examples of pictorial flourishes: quills, birds, swans, etc. Originally published under the title Fascinating Pen Flourishes. DVD23. Off Hand Flourishing DVD
DVD23. Off-Hand Flourishing: Techniques for Ornamental
Penmanship by Michael Sull. DVD.106 minutes.

Michael covers basic tools and materials: pen points, oblique holders, papers. He continues with instruction on preparing and using colored and gold inks, including mixing a sepia ink from vermilion sumi & Higgins Eternal; using Dr. Martin's Bleed Proof White; and Schmincke metallic gouaches.

The "off-hand" instruction begins with the primary flourishing strokes, and then Michel presents the basic steps for cartouches, scrolls, border designs, quills, birds, title flourishing, accent flourishes, and creative patterns. The DVD finishes with a selection of over 50 different historical designs by a range of master penmen. It's the closest thing to having Michael in the room teaching you!

All our DVDs are made to run on USA and Canada machines. If you live outside North America, you should check with the manual for your machine to see if it can play NTSC format DVDs. If your DVD player can't play our DVDs, your computer may be able to.

B2463. Spencerian Practice Pack/Sull

In this set by Michael Sull, the 29 printed sheets feature 100 model lines of penmanship encompassing the lowercase letters, capitals, words, sentences, and over 700 blank lines for your writing. I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford
