Yves Leterme

Yves Leterme- Gestural Writing
Supply List
Most of the time the students will work with black on white. They will surely need:
- A mechanical pencil (with refills HB 0,5 mm) (S681)
- Speedball nibs C5, C4 an C3. (N09, H65)
- Black non-waterproof ink (e.g. Pelican) (I04)
- A lot (more or less 100 sheets) of cheap smooth exercise paper (P20-100) (I usually work on photocopierpaper) A3 format, that allows to produce sharp lines without the ink flowing out.
- a few sheets of quality paper (e.g. BFK Rives) (PS91), not too big
- a ruler (S271)
only to bring with you if you already have these:

- a pointed brush (BR26)
- a pentel pointed brush (FP57)
- some aquarel and gouache (WNG512, WNG331, WNG337, WNGPDP-S, WNGDP-S)
- ruling pen (N22), colapen…(N30)

BR26. W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush
W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush, Round, Short Handle

For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose watercolor work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess excellent color holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability. Recommended by Michael Sull.

High quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for watercolor and suitable for use with acrylic. For watercolor media, while today's synthetic brushes perform excellently, pure sable still has the edge. With a blend you can get performance that is close to sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in Sceptre Gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high-quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes, and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.

Winsor & Newton Gouache: Double Primary Set

Colors (all Series 1):
Alizarin Crimson
Flame Red
Lemon Yellow
Phthalo Blue
Spectrum Yellow
Ultramarine (Blue)
Zinc White

Sheila Waters teaches color mixing using a double primary set: a warm and cool of each of red, blue and yellow. With the six primaries you can mix brighter colors. (a) The cool yellow tends toward green. The cool blue tends toward green. These two are used for mixing all the colors between yellow and blue. This includes all of the greens, greenish yellows such as chartreuse, and greenish blues such as teal. (b) The warm red tends toward orange. The warm yellow tends toward orange. These two are used for mixing all the colors between yellow and red (oranges and all orange-reds and orange-yellows). (c) The warm blue tends toward purple and is mixed with the warm red for the purplish colors. Winsor & Newton is our most popular gouache and is highly recommended. It is excellent for calligraphy.

For a lightfast Double Primary Set, purchase WNGPDP-S. It contains a similar palette of warm and cool colors, but the pigments are more permanent when exposed to light. The colors are not exactly the same, but they mix in a similar fashion.

N30. Folded Ruling Pen
Folded Ruling Pen

Introduced at Letterforum in 1995, this innovative lettering tool has been popular ever since. Use it to produce tight "brush lettering" with a pen or for wild, fun, expressive lettering. These are the originals made by Matthew Coffin and highly praised by Carl Rohrs and Peter Thornton as superior to others that are available.

Peter Thornton has his students use our Polishing Paper (S107) to lightly abrade the outer and inner surfaces of the Folded Pen. This allows the ink to spread out on the pen instead of beading up.
