Acrylic paint either in tube form or in "concentrated artist's
colors" – basic color values I tones you prefer
Acrylic Ink will be used for most of your lettering. A variety of colors in
your palette is advisable, and these can also be used for "staining"
so if you want a wider variety of color get it in these for now. I've been
using FW Acrylic Artist's Ink
Brushes: Don't buy a huge variety of sizes and check your own inventory…you
probably have something that will work. You'll use a 1 to 1 ½" flat brush (BR01)
for laying down color, and some smaller flat brushes as well (maybe number 8 or
so) (BR24). Get brushes for acrylic as opposed to those designed
primarily for oil
Trays: The little round palette trays with seven or so modules that are made of
ceramic (S747). Also, the rectangular baked enamel metal "art" trays
P21. JNB Graph Pad 11x17, 50 Sheets JNB Graph Pad
Light blue grid (8 squares/inch). 24 lb bond. 11"x17". Approx. 50 sheets.
A non-bleeding paper that is great for calligraphy. (We use the same paper in our JNB Practice Pads.) Many instructors have their students use this pad in their classes.
(For graph with slant lines P01.)
Please choose color: Light or Dark.
Light: This grid does not show on many copiers, shows faintly on others, and usually disappears when you adjust the exposure one setting lighter. If you use a copier to produce your finished art for reproduction, this is the pad for you. This pad is good for jobs done at quick printers.
Dark: For classes, some students may appreciate a slightly darker grid. This is particularly true for adult classes. This is still a light blue grid. Some teachers have commented that their students found the original pad's grid was too light.
I13. FW Artists Ink FW Acrylic Artists Ink. For dip pen, brush, and technical pens (but not fountain pens). Pigmented, water-resistant. Lightfastness: either 3 (permanent) or 4 (highly permanent) star rating. Fully intermixable. Can be thinned (with water) for washes which dry water-resistant and additional painting or lettering can be done on top without bleeding or intermixing of colors. In addition to paper & board, will bond to glass, leather, ceramic & wood.
1oz (30ml) glass bottle.

These shimmering inks are a pearl white with an iridescence of the color: Shimmering Blue, Shimmering Gold, Shimmering Green.
This popular Japanese sumi ink is good both for beginners and for professional work. Smooth, rich black. Hard to find. One of the popular sumi inks for calligraphy. 6.75 oz, 200 ml bottle.
"The Best Bottle Sumi Ink truly is the best bottle. You can write three to four times longer with a pointed pen nib before the ink dries between the tines enough to alter the writing (this compared to Moon Palace)." C. M.
My test for any ink is to see if it will produce sharp thick and thin strokes at less than one sixteenth inch body height with a #6 Mitchell nib. Stick ink passes that test while most bottled inks don't, especially waterproof inks including sumi ones. The brown bottle sumi [Best Bottle] is non-waterproof, and I find it is better than others. –S.W.
I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label
While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.
"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!" --Clair F., Jan 2011.
Four sizes available:
2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
6.0 oz (180ml)
15 & 60 oz are temporarily unavailable: arriving Dec 2019
M06. Zig Waterproof (Pigmented) Marker
Zig Waterproof Marker. Pigmented ink. You get two tips on each pen: 2.0mm & 5.0mm. Water-resistant on paper when completely dry: their marks do not feather and bleed when water is dropped onto them, unlike marks made with non-waterproof markers. Now called Memory System Calligraphy Marker.
M43. Pitt Brush Lettering Pens M43. Pitt Artist Pen Brush.
These Faber-Castell brush pens are pigmented, acid-free, and the individual colors are rated for lightfastness, just like your tubes of gouache and watercolor. Because they dry waterproof, you can letter over them without bleeding. Linda Schneider loves using them to write pointed pen scripts such as Copperplate and Spencerian - with a brush marker!

Great for mixing and storing color or ink. Straight sides. Wide mouth is works well for dipping pointed and broad-edge pens. Lined lid. The 1 oz. size is similar to the McCaffery's Penman Ink jars and has a plastic cap.
