B06 The Magic of the Ruling Pen
Louie Lemoine
All Skill Levels - 2.5 Days

The following is the Materials/Supply List with a few revisions and/or additions:
1. The paper that I suggest is Strathmore Charcoal 300 Series (P68). I find that this works great with walnut ink. This is not to say that you should bring what you like, I am just sharing with you what I use.
2. I show three styles of a ruling pen (N33, N22, N30, N148). From left to right there is a Swedish Ruling pen, that is a bit larger than the standard version shown next to it. These both have an adjustment screw to control the width of the line. They are both Drafting style ruling pens. If you can, stay away from the Ruling Writer as I feel it is just to large, and releases too much ink. The third one from the left is a folded pen. this works similar to the standard style ruling pens but because it is a folded style there is no adjustment that van be made for the size of the line when holding it in a vertical position. My preferences are either of the ones that have a screw adjustment. I will be bringing several styles with me (more than what is shown) to share with you their individual characteristics. You DO NOT need to purchase a bunch of these. I will also be showing you how to make a cola pen as these are fun to use as well. If you would like to ale one in class as I am showing it all you need is a piece of aluminum from a coke style beverage can no smaller than 2.25 inches square, some tape, scissors and a no. 2 pencil to attach the finished pen head to. this is optional however, you may find that after making one of these that it may become a favorite :)
3. Pencil: I use a pentel .7mm mechanical pencil with 2H lead. This is just a suggestion so you do not have to sharpen the lead. (PL03, PL04)
4. The straight edge that I use is an Alvin Parallel Glider. this is just a suggestion. (S730)
5. Eraser: Magic Rub (S86)
6. Prismacolor French Grey 30% marker (M101)
7. Ink: Walnut ink (I53) or Higgins NON waterproof black ink (I134). Both of these work great
8. Sakura Micron Pigma 05 marker (M17)

N33. Thomas Hoyer Haff Ruling Pen (629 U)
N33. Hoyer Ruling Pen
Thomas Hoyer Ruling Pen, Haff Ruling Pen (629 U)

Thomas Hoyer uses this fine-crafted, traditional ruling pen for expressive lettering. 5"overall length; nickel-plated tool steel alloy. Both Thomas and this ruling pen come from Germany. He has introduced the tool as a writing instrument at several conferences and workshops in the USA and Europe. This ruling pen was sold by HAFF as their number 629U. These are now coming from the manufacturer, a small family firm, which has given us more options for handles.

This ruling pen is now available in a range of handle materials. The Black Aladdinite has more heft than the Black Plastic (The writing part is identical in each.)

N30. Folded Ruling Pen
Folded Ruling Pen

Introduced at Letterforum in 1995, this innovative lettering tool has been popular ever since. Use it to produce tight "brush lettering" with a pen or for wild, fun, expressive lettering. These are the originals made by Matthew Coffin and highly praised by Carl Rohrs and Peter Thornton as superior to others that are available.

Peter Thornton has his students use our Polishing Paper (S107) to lightly abrade the outer and inner surfaces of the Folded Pen. This allows the ink to spread out on the pen instead of beading up.

S730. Parallel Glider 10in length
Professional-quality rolling ruler/ parallel glider. 10". For fast, accurate guidelines. Specify inches or metric. This is the deluxe version of the Rolling Ruler. This item has rubber wheels that slip much less than the plastic wheels found on most rolling rulers.

Use this tool to speed up making pencil guideline. Draw your first guideline. Then make a single column of dots or small marks for each subsequent line. Line the rolling ruler or parallel guide on the first mark. Then you roll down and draw your guidelines at your marks. The ruler keeps the lines parallel. Mark your paper using a ruler, template or dividers with tick marks. Great for drawing guidelines for text blocks on larger works where a T-square is not practical.
