POINTED PEN VARIATIONS – Mike Kecseg
Copperplate is a beautiful, flowing hand steeped in tradition. While very practical there may be a time when you'll want to break with this traditional style and create letterforms that are more expressive and contemporary. In this class we'll take the same flexible pointed pen we've been using for copperplate and use it to explore the potential for creating new and exciting letterforms. Through step-by -step instruction we'll start with an informal pen script and then move toward creating a "gothicized" script and an "uncialized" script. Along the way we'll develop a confidence with the pointed pen and discover the unique advantages of lettering with a flexible tool. Skill Level: All

Supplies: Pointed pen nibs (examples: Hunt #101, Gillott #303, Hiro #41, Nikko "G", Leonardt EF Principal or your favorite nib) (N77, N72, N81, N113, N120), Oblique pen holder (H95, H50, H61), Straight pen holder (H62, H63), Black ink (examples: Higgins Eternal (I08), McCaffrey's (I37), Moon Palace Sumi (I70), ink stick and grinding stone (IS29, IS19) or your favorite ink), Graph paper with 1/8" squares (P22),1-2 sheets or half sheets of a quality art paper (examples: Arches HP (PS42), Canson Mi Tientes (PS61), Diploma Parchment (PS84) or your favorite art paper), Pencil (PL03), Straight edge, Protractor (S632) or adjustable triangle (S924), Gouache or colored ink (white (WNG512) or Dr. PH Martin's bleedproof white (I38), black (WNG331, WNG335) and 2-3 colors of your choice (WNG523, WNG524, WNG527), Mixing tray (S679) or mixing cups, Mixing brush (BR43), Drawing board (optional) (S690), T-square (optional) (S753)

Brush lettering books are useful for this Pointed Pen Variations class. Pointed brush forms in those books can also be written with the flexible pointed pen!

N77. Hunt 101 Nib
Hunt 101 Imperial.

A very steady and durable nib, the Hunt 101 is a great choice for projects that require larger writing with x-heights above 1/4". It can be used on most paper surfaces, though it can have a tendency to catch on the upstroke when used on a rougher surface. The Hunt 101 requires firm and deliberate pressure to open swells, while its strength and steadiness makes it an ideal selection for student practice. Bronze finish.

N72. Gillott 303 Nib
N72. Gillott 303 Pointed Nib.

A popular nib for Copperplate. Good flexibility - not too stiff, not too flexible. Very thin hairlines and good swells. Works for scripts 3/16-1/16". Sharp point but will work on slightly textured surfaces. Tends to catch on upstrokes.

Your Price $1.19

N81. Hiro / Leonardt #40 Nib (Blue Pumpkin)
N81. Hiro / Leonardt #40 Nib (Blue Pumpkin)

The Hiro #40 Nib (Blue Pumpkin) nib no longer has "Hiro" stamped on it; instead it is now stamped "Leonardt."

One of our most popular nibs for Copperplate. Large, durable nib appropriate for writing at x-heights of 3/16" to 1/8". Hairlines are fine and uniform, upstrokes smooth.
Sometimes called Leonard Steno or Manuscript Steno.

The quality of this nib matches the low price. For a higher-quality version of this nib, see N90. Brause Steno Nib.

N113. Nikko G Nib
N113. Nikko G Nib.

These nibs from Japan are hand cut, extremely smooth, and long-lasting. They are chrome plated and have a medium flex. Great for Spencerian. Smooth writing with no burrs or scratchiness. Highly recommended by Michael Sull.

N120. Leonardt Principal EF Nib
N120.EF Principal Nib

You can now purchase a modern nib that is equal to the best of the vintage nibs. Brian Walker, a respected pointed pen enthusiast, has worked with a pen manufacturer to duplicate the quality and performance of the legendary Gillott No 1 Principality. The new nib has received rave reviews for both Copperplate and Spencerian. It's flexible and responsive and gives fine hairlines, but is smooth-writing and catches the paper less.

Your Price $2.95

H61. Blackwell Plastic Handle Oblique Holder
Blackwell Oblique Pen Holder Plastic Handle

Black plastic hourglass penholder with the same brass flange for holding the nibs. The brass work is not as finely finished but is just as functional. Works with small nibs such as the Brause 66EF and almost all other nibs.

A remarkably simple design that holds most pen points for
Spencerian and Copperplate. Designed to hold the nib at a less steep slant angle for ease of upstrokes. Also available with a brass and wood handle.

(Works with most all nibs except the very largest vintage nibs and crowquill nibs.)

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

Four sizes available:

2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
6.0 oz (180ml)

15 & 60 oz are temporarily unavailable: arriving Dec 2019

IS29. Chinese Ink Stick - Dense Black
A very black inkstick from China. Great for western calligraphy. Stick ink can be used for calligraphy and sumi painting. 4.4 x 1.1 x .5 inches (11.2 x 2.8 x 1.3 cm).

In my opinion (and in many others) stick ink is the best ink you can use. I have never yet found a bottled ink that comes near to stick ink, Chinese or Japanese, though western calligraphers tend to prefer Chinese as it is blacker. It is well worth the short time it takes to grind. It can be transferred by pipette to a small container with lid. Don't reserve it for practice but use it instead of bottled inks for best work too. S.W.

IS19. Shakyo-Ken Ink Stone
Shakyo-Ken Ink Stone

Unlike most ink stones, this one has a flat surface for grinding and a deep well to collect the ink. Ideal for dipping nibs. 65x124x14 mm / 2.5 x 4.75 x .63 inches. Similar to the Penestone Ink Stone, but smaller. Made in Japan of stone with a very dense grain. Boku-Undo Suzuri Ink Stone 24025.
