COLORED PENCIL BASICS – Bob Hurford
Colored pencils are a vastly underrated medium too often placed in the same category as crayons. Colors are brilliant and when properly applied, colored pencils look like a painting. They are great on greeting cards. Colored pencils scan and print very well. We will discuss various blending techniques, combining gradients of different colors. To burnish or not to burnish will be another question we will look at. Watercolors also work with colored pencils. I will show how the two create great vibrant tones. In the end we will have painted a decorated letter. Skill Level: All

Supplies: In addition to the pencils listed below, there is other equipment you will find useful: pencil sharpener (S746); water brush (FP93) or brush for tube watercolor; tortillon (S781) (medium paper stump); eraser (E27) (the pencil shaped eraser with the brush on the end works best); colorless blender marker (M101) (this marker contains odorless mineral spirits which melts and blends wax pencils); glue. The following wax pencils are Prismacolor, my favorite. Other brands work well. Make sure the wax pencils are soft and not student grade. A minimal number of pencils are listed in case you are just trying them out. No use in spending any more cash than necessary. Prismacolor Wax Pencils (PL05): PC916 Canary Yellow; PC918 Orange; PC937 Tuscan Red; PC922 Poppy Red; PC908 Dark Green; PC913 Spring Green; PC901 Indigo Blue; PC919 Non-Photo Blue; PC1087 Powder Blue; PC 938 White; PC1077 Colorless Blender. Prismacolor Col-Erase Pencils (these are clay based instead of wax) (PL07): #20054 Tuscan Red; #20059 Light Gray. Prismacolor Verithin Pencils (S818) (very hard pencils that have their use): #734 White. Watercolor Pencils (PL06): Prismacolor WC2917 Sunburst Yellow; Derwent Inktense (PL08) 0200 Sun Yellow. Equivalent pencils or yellow tube watercolor will also work. Note: Inktense pencils are ink based, not watercolor based. Once Inktense dries, the color is permanent, unlike watercolor. Paper: My favorite is 140# Stonehenge. Two sheets (PA95), 7x11 (cut an 11x14 sheet in half). Watercolor paper, 140# hot press, is an alternative. Make sure the sheet selected is at least 140#. Thinner paper will not take multiple layers of color. Tracing paper (P43): To transfer supplied designs to your Stonehenge. Two sheets, 81/2" x 11" will do.
