DRAWING AND PAINTING THE DECORATIVE MISSAL OR LOMBARDIC LETTER - Rosemary Buczek
In this class we will look at the forms of these beautiful bold letters. What makes them so alluring and how are they drawn? These letters can be expanded as well as condensed and understanding their structure will then help with understanding how we illustrate them. Additionally, this particular class will cover the aspects of monochromatic painting as well. So, by the end of class we will have drawn and painted a letter in one color with depth and interest. Monochromatic painting was a favorite technique of P. W. Costello who is one of my very favorite engrossers of the Golden Age. This particular technique of monochromatic painting is very handy to know and understand and is particularly appropriate for memorials. Skill Level: Intermediate (or be brave!)

Supplies: Two brushes — one small for detail and one larger for the washes. Winsor Newton Series 7 brush size 1 and a size 3 or 4 (BR28) or Raphael Kolinsky size 1 and a size 3 or 4 (BR46). Paynes Gray—preferably Winsor Newton brand Watercolor (WN465) (not gouache), palette (S679) and mixing dishes for water (S784), paper towels, Arches or Fabriano Artistico HP 140# paper cut to about 9" x 12", tracing paper, pencil, kneaded eraser, drafting tape.

BR28. W&N Series #7 Watercolor Brush
Series 7 fulfills the essential qualities that define the finest watercolor brush for artists: Point: The brush comes to a crisp point which is maintained during use. Snap & Spring: The brush snaps crisply back into shape with the right degree of spring to allow the artist superior control between the brush and painting surface. Flow Control: The color flows evenly and consistently from the point, with enough color carrying capacity in the belly of the brush to allow flowing gestural strokes. For artists who appreciate exquisite quality and longevity, there is no other brush than the Series 7. Today, just as in 1866, the Series 7 is made for those who understand that the quality of the brush will be reflected in the quality of their work.
